That's a nice thing to have especially if you're ever in a bind or something.

my daughter isnt in a play"group" but she plays with the neighbor girl a couple times a week, i take my daughter to their house and me and the other little girls mom talk while the girls play for a couple hours, we have gotten so close that we trust each other with our kids, i baby sit her kids and take them to the playground with me so she can relax and she does the same thing with my little one, its nice to have some alone time and know that your child is ok and in good hands and is probably having a lot of fun, the other day Trista (the neighbor girl shes 3) asked me "wheres my best friend at?" talking about my daughter Sara who just turned 2, it was the most adorable thing i have ever heard and i know that my daughter got her first friend before the age of 2

I have a friend who got me to join meetup.com very recently and we found a playgroup in our area... I have yet to go since our schedule couldn't hold any of the playdates, but I can't wait to try it out.

I went to a local play group when my daughter was 6 weeks old, they had a vote and decided that rather than catching up for a coffee that mummy and baby yoga was in store for future catch ups, plus everyone had to bring a healthy dish (preferably vegetarian) All of my friends laughed when I told them because they know I am the last person in the world who would sign up for yoga.

So I haven't been back to another one, however I am moving soon so I will try and get involved in one when I am settled in to hopefully make some mummy friends.

Maybe you should start your own too Joanna. Then you can make sure that people feel welcomed and not discriminatedagainst. :)

I joined a local playgroup for late 2007 babies when my daughter was 8 months old. It was fun for awhile, there weren't many moms so we all sort of bonded. But then SO many people joined, and the moms I did bond with all had other babies and had to stop coming... I went to a playgroup a month ago and knew NO one, there was about 25 moms and their kids there, and a majority were snobby and wouldn't really talk to me (I'm pretty much the youngest mom in my area, it's a nice area in Orange County, plus I have tattoos, so that worked against me). So yeah, I don't think I'll go back.

I started a mums group here in Hong Kong. So far I've met 9 mums. Helped me with the loneliness factor of being so far away from loved ones. It's pretty casual and more about getting out of the house than having focussed topics or something.
