Does your kids school have a no sunblock rule?

I didn't even THINK about this until I read it! You actually have to have a doctors note in Washington state to apply sunblock on a kid. WTF??

So kids come home sunburned. I've never heard of this. Here you just bring the sunscreen to school and they apply it duh! Apparently ONLY the kids can apply sunblock, the teacher's aren't allowed.

How mad would you be?

Omg really! That state is so screwed up....another reason I didn't want to move to that state. Thank god I am moving to TX instead. Do they know u can get skin cancer from the sun! I would be one pissed of parent if my kid came home all sun burned becuase they don't allow sunscreen unless u have a doc note. That's really messed up.

Sounds like the equivalent to a buttermenthol, which they would sell over the counter to a kid here. Crazy. Next thing you know they'll be dictating what goes in their lunchboxes....oh, wait, that's right, many schools already do that! But they still don't think sunscreen is important? Gah.....

Right? It was a Halls Cherry flavor, but they still consider it a form of medication, thus a drug, and a zero tolerance policy.

Kristi, that's bizarre, I've sent my daughter with cough drops to school and no-one questions it.

That's why they don't like you to take tubes of sunscreen and suggest roll on......we supply roll ons in the summer to the kids, they reapply it at lunch time. I make sure they are sunblocked up before they head out the door.

We just moved to WA and I sent my daughter (age 12, 6th grade) to school with a couple of cough drops in her pocket because she had a really bad sore throat and cough (uh..duh, right?). And her teacher, thank goodness is very cool, sent me an email saying she could get suspended for having that on her person. Kids are not allowed to have or carry medication of any kind at school. If they need it, like a prescription, you have to take it in (it has to be labelled), sign some sort of release form and they keep it in the office in a locked safe box, oh and it has to be in a zip lock baggie with the childs name on it, too. After school you have to go pick it up, they won't give it to the kid to bring home. So they "frown upon" bringing any medicine on to the school grounds. Like I said, her teacher is awesome and she thinks it is over the top too, but she said because of liability and the sue-happy nation we are they have to make it like that.

Crazy, crazy times! You can't have a cough drop, but we'll send you home with skin cancer!

here we wear hats. i don't recall ever taking sunscreen to school or coming home sunburnt. i can just imagine small children taking sunscreen in their bags then sitting on their bag or having a bag fight and coming home with sunscreen all through their bag.

Living in Australia, my kids have known how to do their own sunblock since they were about 4 or 5, so I don't need to rely on anyone else doing it for them....they actually teach them how to do it themselves at daycare. By the time they are in preschool, we provide a little roll on sunblock for them to apply their own. It would be utterly insane here not to teach your kids how to apply it because you can burn in 10 minutes here in the summer.

But we never had to sign for it, it was automatically applied on every child UNLESS specified by a parent otherwise.

We also have no hat no play policies here too.

we can send sunscreen but the kids have to apply it themselves. When my son was in daycare they would apply it, I dont think I had to sign a form for it, but I might have, my sons 9 so it was a while ago.

I'm in U.K. Our nursery kids aren't allowed outside if they don't have sunblock on, they have some in the bathroom that you can apply if you've forgotten but the teachers aren't allowed to do it (?), even though they're allowed to change a kid that's pee'd. They're supposed to wear hats in the sun too, but nursery have spares. Kids in Mia's class (yr1 5/6yrs old), are also to wear sunscreen but the teachers have never checked and they don't make them wear their hats either.
Bethany, I am soooo hearing you on the British weather front. It's summer and my garden's dissapearing cause of the rain. Anyone fancy a swim? :)

I understand the concept of a note. But this school didn't even TELL the parents they needed one!

When i enrolled thomas at daycare i had to sign a form that the carers could put sunscreen on him otherwise he cant go outside at all. So i expect the school to do the same and considering hes a fair blondie and just like me i expect him to burn like i do even at the mention of the sun.

Thats crazy. Not too sure about schools here but I know preschool asks that you apply suncream, that they have provided, to your child as you drop them off. They then re apply accordingly throughout the day and put a stamp on the kids hands so they know who has it on and who doesn't.

Ok, I thought it was insane too. Glad I'm not the only one.

That's insane. I put it on my daughter in the morning and send the bottle with her. The classroom aide always helps my daughter put it on again at lunchtime.
