I just have to say......stork parking

There is a debate I started in DM about stork parking. Now a lot of the woman say no, it's not necessary. I fully think it is. Now my question is do you think it's worth it? Do you think it should be removed? Or do you think people need it?

When I was pregnant I was huge, I needed the extra room. I also had a 3.5 year old to contend with. The carts are parked right there too.

What do you think?

I think it's great! I am a little bit disabled (look normal but my joints kill me due to previous surgeries) and when I was in my later stages of pregnancy - it was painful to walk. That aside, I think it's about time they offered this to pregnant women. I think they need to pampered. Being pregnant is a special thing. Let's face it, a day while pregnant and chasing their first born(s) or working all day, it's a nice treat. I can't see why anyone would have an issue with it.

i like it. Like u said the carts are right there, you dont have to deal with leaving ur kids in the car to run and get a cart, or drag your kids through the parking lot risking getting hit. you can just put them in the cart and go.

I loved being able to use stork parking when I was pregnant. I wan't super huge but there where days when I was too tired to walk to the bathroom let alone 30' into a store. It was a nice treat.

There was one time during my first pregnancy I had twisted my ankle in the middle of a grocery trip; a closer parking spot would have been appreciated (though I did use one of those scooters for the rest of the trip LOL). I had a lot of hip pain with my second pregnancy in addition to a toddler, so I used stork parking whenever I could. So yeah, I think it is worth it.

Perfectly fine with me! My kids are 14 months apart and when I was HUGE, my son was only 11 month old and unable to walk. However now my kids are big and I am not preggers, and I see MEN park there ALONE all the time. Most of the time they "appear" pregnant themselves so maybe that's why their lazy asses park there? I dunno.

All of our malls have them here, and some grocery stores. Walmart does, and I think some other big box stores, like Home Depot, do too. I find them funny at Babies R Us - everyone who shops there is either pregnant or has small children!

They have them at some grocery stores and kids' stores here. Some malls and Walmarts have them, too.

The only place I've EVER seen this is at a store called Babies R Us and well they obviously cater to women and babies.

What stores have you guys seen them at?

I agree with the temporary handicapped tag. We're just not equipped in this country to really help people on a general scale. Sucks

I just didn't go anywhere without my boyfriend. It wasn't worth the stress and pain. I had such a hard pregnancy the second time around I couldn't even lift my son by myself after I was 4 months along so I honestly don't really know.......

I had a lot of pelvic pain with both my pregnancies. Not enogh to disable me but some days I had none and could go do whatever and walk across the car park but some days it was like SOMEONE ELSE GO BUY MILK!

Becky,

Alittle off sibject, but I had the same problem with my second pregnacy. SO for my third I would sit on a inflatable exercise ball when ever I would sit at the table and had something to balance me. I would use it to help open my pelvis to reduce pain. It helped me a lot. Maybe it will help you too.

I shared my thoughts in the other thread, but I am 100% for it. Getting across an icy parking lot with 2 kids 3 and under when you are 9 months pregnant in the dead of winter is no easy, or safe, feat! So if there is a spot right up near the doors, darn right I'm going to take it!

With my second pregnancy, I often had to have my husband drop me off at the door and then go and park and then go get the truck and pick me up at the doors again on the way out because I had really bad pelvic pain and the less walking I had to do, the better. That was when I was lucky enough to have him along when I went shopping! Fortunately, that hasn't hit, yet, this pregnancy, but I"m only 24 weeks, so I can see the potential for it happening again. And add to that that I'll be most pregnant in the winter... Well, I already said what I'd do to anyone who begrudges me that parents with small children spot! :P

It depends on the pregnancy. I didn't need it but it's great for those who do. I've had friends who have been "disabled" by their pregnancy and it takes eons to get a disabled sticker here. So the stork parking is great for them. I also think it's useful for pregnant women trying to wrestle toddlers. Which also isn't me.

Frankly, I found a number of posts in that thread rather lacking in empathy, which seems like a popular trend lately.

I think it depends on the person and their pregnacy. I was huge when I was pregnant plus I had major complications. I wasn't allowed to be up more than an hour a day. Close parking was a neccesity. My first pregnacy I wouldn't have needed it but the last three I did.

That's so odd to me. Of course this is a new thing here. Maybe 4-5 years.

Nowhere near us had 'stork' parking and we didn't have the car then, but I was sooo big I would've needed it. I did have a look at the parent and child parking at Asda today though and you can park in those bays until your kids are out of car seats/boosters or 12 yrs old. Seemed a bit excessive? No car again now so I have to carry as much as I can. Buying myself a granny shopper next week :)

I used the "Parents with Small Children" parking tonight on the way home from my in-laws' house. It was raining, my back is out, and we only have the one umbrella in the car. It helped. Jason took Corbin as quick as he could, and I took Lynn and the umbrella. If we would have had to park all the way across the lot, my back never would have made it. I'm thankful for that parking option.

I think it's great and we need it. We only have these stroller parks and there's no trolley bay near it adn the parks arent wider. I NEED WIDER PARKS DAMMIT.

I needed it. I used it. Ours are also for families with small children. I still use those when I go out. If I don't have the kids with me, or if I only have Corbin with me, I don't use it. But I'm glad it's there.

i LOVED being able to use the spot (ours is for pregnant and new moms with babies up to 6 months old). I didn't use it all the time, but when I was very pregnant in the hottest part of summer and my ankles were the size of cantelopes it was a wonderful thing! The extra space was a must for getting the car seat in and out as well (especially on windy days when i couldn't hold the door and get him in/out at the same time).

I never needed it. I had a SUPER easy pregnancy, both times, and my driver (my grandparents :P) had a handicapped tag.
But I definitely think that it's a great idea. I actually got bitched out by this ignorant prick teen boy because I scratched the paint on his (apparently newly painted) car door. Okay, I could understand being upset. . .but not when you're on MY side of the line and have over 3 feet on your other side! I was trying to get my son's car seat into the truck at the time.
I think ALL parking spaces should be a little bit bigger, but for a mom with a car seat and a stroller, definitely handicapped sized parking places are a must!

I don't know how I feel about a place just for PREGNANT women though. Most don't need it. I think it should be easier for pregnant moms to get a temp handicapped ticket though. I think that might be a better option.

Ours are handicapped size. So we have a lot of room. Thank God.

*I* didn't need it, however I see a lot of women who do need it--really, they NEED--and I don't mind leaving a space closer to the door for them. Why not? A new mom should not have to heard her 2 small kids across a busy parking lot while carrying a newborn--that's just dangerous! So what's the big deal about letting her have a closer space?

What does bother me, is that our stork spots are no wider than the regular ones, so really, it's just a spot a little closer to the door. What's the point? I think they should be a little wider to make it easier to get the kids in and out--especially if it is a new mom fussing with a carrier.

I could have used it that's for sure. I have 3 kids, so for the past two pregnancies I had toddlers besides. This last one I started dilating at 30 weeks. There were a few times when I was amazed everyone got n the store okay. Then of course there was getting out with groceries, two toddlers, and being pregnamnt. Some stores have it and most do not around here. But I could have used it.
