Ok, who's done this?

Be honest: How many times have you turned to Google to get to the bottom of some random, perhaps very minor, physical ailment -- a funny red bump on your toe or a weird ringing in one ear or a stinging pain in your left elbow -- and ended up staring at your laptop in horror while mentally drawing up a will?

Yeah, that's what I figured ... been there myself quite a few times. Don't worry, we're not alone. But we're not necessarily doing ourselves any good, either.

According to a recent study, women are more likely to consult the internet than their actual doctor when they're not feeling well -- and the internet is more likely than their actual doctor to give them a false diagnosis (at which point they feel worse).

Ladies, ladies, ladies. What's our problem? Why don't we just go to the doctor?!

Oh. Yeah, I don't have any time, either. And that's true, if I didn't have health insurance there's no way I'd be able to afford it.

More from The Stir: How to Make Sure Your Next Doctor's Visit Isn't a Total Bust

But no matter how legit our excuses, we really should go to the doctor, apparently, because we're not just freaking ourselves out by doing our own medical research: By wasting all that time worrying about potential exotic diseases and incurable forms of terminal terror we probably don't have, we're actually missing more common (less dramatic) problems we probably do have!

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

Oh my god, DON'T Google "cutting off your nose." Please, promise me. My kids and I are still emotionally scarred from the time we did a Google Image search for "goiter." (I didn't know they could look THAT bad!)

Anyway.

Go to the doctor!

Have you ever made yourself sick Googling symptoms?

Well i have hypochondria, everything is suspicious to me. I'm pregnant right now and i have hardly any symptoms, as a result i think something is wrong with the baby. Just the other night i had a dream that i was having a miscarriage, im always so worried... When i was 10 years old i was convinced that i had breast cancer, and other diseases. I saw a shrink on multiple occasions. Up until February of this year i had completely cut meat out of my diet for 8 years. As i thought the meat would taint my blood, or some F'd up crap like that. So i turn to the internet alot!! because my doctor is quite frankly, annoyed with me. Lol

I do look things up, but it's a little easier for me to sort the wheat from the chaff in search results with my nursing background. Most times when I go to the doctor having self diagnosed, if I get it wrong at all then I've erred on the conservative side and it's actually more serious. Heh.

They thought I had Grave's disease too. I have a goiter but I'm just borderline.

Lol! I don't have health insurance, so I only go if I HAVE to go. (Insurers do not like people who had cancer). Luckily I have like 3 doctors on my street so I just go ask them...unless it's really personal, then I'll foot the bill to see someone I don't know.

I did have a goiter once! Back when I had cancer the first time, I developed Grave's disease while in the hospital. There was some issue with the radiation and nuclear therapy for the Graves and the chemo for the cancer, so it went on much longer than it should have. Got it sorted out in the end, but I am SO GLAD there are no pictures--imagine a 80lb completely bald chick with a golf ball shoved down her throat--it's ugly.

I'm lucky to have medicaid. I happened to come upon it when it was open. If I didn't have it I would be in BIG trouble!

I've looked up a few bits and bobs for myself, but only if I know what's wrong in the first place. I've also used the NHS website, where you put in your symptoms and it gives a list of possible illnesses etc. You can request a call back from them and they'll ask more in depth questions and advise you on the best course of action. F'in brilliant service when your kid's screaming his head off in the middle of the night and you've tried everything...... and the government wants to muck about with the system?! Pah!

i usually look shit up after my doc has told me what it is lol, tom just had hand foot and mouth from daycare and i figured it was that the doc confirmed it with an additional 2ndary infection and a seperate rash rom a different virus, so i got her to write down all the names and googled them when i got home! best thing about aussie medicare kids under 16 bulked billed so it costs nothing, if im bad enough then she checks me out 2 at no charge but only if the appointment is in toms name lol
