One of those days

I woke up at 2am to my daughter screaming bloody murder - a mouse was on her face trying to get to her tube feed! I guess they're low on food because we've been very careful to keep it inaccessible to mice, but good lord I never thought they'd go after my kids as a result.

Our 3 year old son has a feeding tube as well, and multiple food allergies. We're trying to not use his tube unless we have to, as we don't want to lose even more progress for eating as he gets older. So I gave him his formula in a sipper cup, which was then thrown across the room 3 times. And I gave him a gluten free hot dog, which was then dumped on the floor. Then the cup was thrown again. And breakfast was Kix, which I had to clean up off the floor as well. De-freaking-lightful.

One of my iguanas bit me, so he needs a new home. He's had an attitude problem since we got him. Our other is sweet as pie, so it's certainly not a lizard thing.

We put out a bunch of mice traps today and found wiring chewed on in the basement. I'm just grateful we have house insurance at the moment! And we learned that fox urine can repel them (they move away when predators are near), but we don't want to spray it and have them all move into our living areas...so we're leery. It's so strong that we don't want it throughout the house. We will use it if we need to though! Stupid mice!!!

On a positive note, I can pay for an exterminator to come on Monday because of all the holiday pay from work I got on Friday! Lol!!!

Put out anti freeze in bowls around the house where only the mice can get to it.

We didn't buy it. Forgot when we got to the town with it....plus the fact that we have so much snow around the house, not much we can do on the perimeter right now outside.

Gah! I feel your frustration! I just posed the question to my husband 'what do you do if you have mice and are allergic to cats and can't put down poison because of the toddlers?' His answer: get a snake :o) My only other thought is a terrier type dog or a pet ferret (like, because you are not busy enough taking care of kids right??).
Did the fox urine make any difference?

So the exterminator was here, and now he is gone. He was amazed at how much we have already done ourselves! But really, not enough. He went in the basement and saw what I meant by it being "in bad shape", and he saw how crowded we are upstairs (832 sq ft house for 7 of us, 2 with immense special needs so medical supply storage crap) and how things have been kept pretty well controlled even with all that. The basement has so many holes! I knew that. We went down and no lights on, you could see the sun shining outside through the blocks, and snow coming in. So yes, mice are getting in EVERYWHERE. He went outside to try and figure out something, and blocked the worst space (2 foot hole) with a board and wire mesh and expandofoam (we didn't have mesh in it this summer when it was fixed). He's going to come back tomorrow to see if it expanded enough, because it's so cold it might not. He's also bringing locked bait boxes for the large bait chunks so our son with PICA can't eat it by accident for upstairs. He laid out more traps, same as we already had, same stuff on them (peanut butter)... I'm not sure it's going to make a lot of difference since so much is what we had already done and we're still struggling. Can't we just mouse bomb the house like they do for bugs and be done with it? Gah!

If you spray around the perimeter of your house I don't think that would necessarily mean that the ones inside would be trapped inside. I'm not a mouse but I would assume that if the smell of predators scares them off then they would be fleeing from your house even if they had to cross the 'urine border'. Let us know how it goes!

Trying to think like a mouse - would it be good or bad to spray the perimeter when they're already inside? We were also thinking of spraying all entrances and the edge of the floors where they could burrow through to the upstairs, then saturate the basement...

Oh my God. I knew about the mouse problem, I didn't know one of them had gotten to a feeding tube. Damn precocious little f'ers huh?
I don't mind mice but that would really gross me out.

Spray the urine around the perimeter of the house.

Today is so much better! I slept for 8 hours (RARE)! So far, mice traps 0, but none visible at the moment either. They will die! And yes the kids always seem to know exactly what buttons to push. Why do they get a handbook when they're born, but we don't?

Argggggggh! I would still be screaming about the mice thing!

And yes - I live in Australia where we have mice plagues every other bloody year so I know it is not a cleanliness thing - seriously though, if they are going to be attacking your kids in the middle of the night I would definitely be pulling out the fox urine! I hope the exterminator can get it sorted out for you ASAP.

As to the kids and their eating/throwing habits - yea, the little monsters seem to know when we are down and act up accordingly don't they? I'm sorry your night and day were so 'delightful' :o(
