Hey Angela,
I am not too sure if you have still having a problem with fruit flies but I just signed up to offer my suggestions. Before getting into the pest control industry, I had many pest problems and yearned to find out simple answers to many of them. The good news is that fruit fly control is fairly easy and can be done without cost.
Fruit flies go through the following process before they start buzzing around your head:
1) Fruit fly eggs (looks like tiny white dots, very hard to see)
2) Fruit fly larvae (very much like maggots, easily visible)
3) Fruit fly pupae (almost like a cocoon, metamorphosis takes place)
4) That irritating pest called the "fruit fly" :P
I hope that helps you and anybody reading this :)

The vinegar and dish soap works! The cider vinegar attracts them and the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, the fruit flies fall in and drown.

Well after exchanging the soil in all my flower pots, removing dead leaves etc diligently, trapping them and bleaching my drain and washing my recycle bins with bleach and soap...the little nasty pest have dissipated!
Today in fact I notice I did not see one for the first time!

Ok, this is 100% gross, but it WORKS!
Get a tupper wear container that you never want to use again. Put a few pieces of fruit in it, cover tightly with saran wrap, using the tip of a very sharp knife poke lots of little holes in it. They have to be tiny! The plan is the nasty fruit flies, fly in and can't escape, trapping them! Leave this out in the kitchen for at least a week, then just throw it all away. I usually put it on top of a high cup board so i can't see it. Everytime I have had to do this it has really worked, been filled with lots of fruit flies and my problem vanished! Good Luck!

If you have any bottles around that could be the source as well. My last house was invaded with fruit flies and I could not get rid of them or figure out where they were coming from. I finally discovered it was from our bag of returnable bottles we had stored in our storage closet. I picked it up to bring it in a there was a million. Ugh so nasty.

They say to put a couple of bottle caps of white vinigar on your cupboards. That clears them right up.

Angela, they usually lay the eggs on the fruit so when they hatch the larva will have a food source.....thus you should always wash your fruits before you eat them.

Ahhh....the ever annoying....creation of Satan himself.....Drosophila or Fruit Fly.
The linger and feed on overripe and rotting foods. There are some 1400 + species of the fruit fly. Some eat rotting or overripe foods, while other prefer fresh fruit or unripened foods. Many larva will eat fresh fruit and later turn to rotting fruit. The eggs of the fly are laid together in groups of 10-20 so they can be on the same site. The maturing can take anywhere from 7 to 60+ days depending on the species.
In other words, if you have fruit AT ALL expect fruit flies. They are annoying yes but, if anyone organism is completely wiped off the face of the Earth there is usually some kind of dire consequence.

They can bite ewww well I got rid of a good amount of them with bleach down the drain! I then only had them back due to my gardenia plant! They seem to be very attracted to it. I don't want to get rid of my lovely indoor plants so I guess I will put the dish soap concoction out again ...

Citronella doesn't work on fruit flies.
I work for a company that sells essential oils and I swear we've tried everything and our work is still riddled with them, it's so nasty. Just thinking about it grosses me out & I've even been bitten by them & I never even knew fruit flies bit.

Citrus and vinegar might work yes but you could try also scent candles (typical citronella) and citrus inciense. Smoke naturally scares them and somehow disappear without any corpses left. Lorena Barzanti

4 cups of water, 2 tbsp of sugar and vinegar and a couple drops of dish soap in a large bowl. Set it on your counter and watch them congregate. I had the same issue from a pineapple. In 5 days there were over 60 which grossed me out to no end but I have not seen a single one since.

"Honey I have yet another reason why we should move from The Netherlands, their are not any fruit flies in Tasmania, the weather is better too! Whatcha think?" Wanna? Wanna?
My husband spent several months in Oz West side trip. Never been myself but would love love love to go.

I can't put all my fruit in the fridge or i would except some.. yeah I hate Bananas in the fridge too...
I live in The Netherlands, most European fridges including mine at the moment is the size of a double hotel mini fridge with not any freezer. I have separate freezer. So I do not have room for a large bag of apples at all it would take up almost the an entire shelf and I only have two :) 3 if you include the little mini veg drawer.
I plan on getting what they call an American fridge soon oh I can't wait!

Thanks all! I am going to try all the tips today! I do have a lot of hanging house plants in my window in my kitchen...I have to get rid of them they are invading! I open my trash and like 15 fly out! So off to the store to get lemon dish soap, and I already got bleach and vinegar. So I am going to start with the drain.
I declare war on the Fruit Flies! I will let you know how it goes after I get back from the battle field. :)

I've always been told that they come from the soil of plants. Try watering your plants with soapy dishwater and it might help as well.

I actually have a simple recipe that works wonders! Find a cup or small container that you don't want anymore (or are okay with dead fruit flies being in). Fill it half way with vinegar. Add one squirt of citrus-scented (liquid) dish soap. Leave it open on the counter until they all crawl in there and die. They're attracted to the citrus scent, and the vinegar kills them. I do a refill/refresh once a week.
