Wow! You don't understand how that sounded, do you?

So we were in the library, renewing a book. Reading helps me keep my sanity. Anyway, we were getting the normal "Oh what a cute baby! Look at those big eyes!" from different people. One of them was an older gentleman, at least 60 is my best guess, and he said similar things then as we were both finished checking out he asks me, "Is she old enough to have candy?"

I considered the possibility that he was old enough that he didn't understand how this sounded, so I remained polite.

"Oh no. I know she looks big but she's tall for her age. It's still a choking hazard at this point."

And we went our separate ways. But I had to get this out somewhere! REALLY!!? Have you never heard the term strangers with candy? Seriously!? Even if he lives in that wonderful world I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt on. Think before you speak people!!

Thanks! I feel better now! ;)

Logan did well with candy canes at christmas but i don't buy hard candy (or any candy to tell the truth) and he doesn't have lollipops

My daughter is almost 3 and I STILL don't let her have hard candy because I'm terrified she'll choke on it.

At Christmas every year, my father-in-law lets his beard grow and kids think he is Santa. He gives out little candy canes to everyone and nobody thinks he is a freak or pedophile. Whenever my son's boy scout troop has a fundraiser, we give out lollipops. No harm. Nothing wrong with it. I guess it all depends on where you live.

I wouldn't be ok w/ hard candy at that age (unless it's attached to a stick), but otherwise... I'm w/ Emma. I DO live in a different world though. ;)

Good for you Tina!

Emma, I was also being truthful with him. He had a handful of hard candy & she isn't even 2 yet. Realllly not sure she's ready for that yet.

It is nice to know there are still people out there with good intentions & faith in others. Sadly most of the time that isn't my first instinct.

I went to see my partner at work. I drop in with the kids when he's not busy. This man turns up polite enough. He's the partner of one of the woman who also works at the service station they never had kids anyway after talking. He was buying himself some lollies and asks if my son is allowed to have some. I said I guess so. I take my son over the man offers the lollies my son although looked curious wouldn't take any I grabbed some for him and he took them from me. I was pleased with him. I'm glad he will only take stuff from me or someone he is only familiar with. He didn't know this man. My partner says to me it's ok this guy isn't a stranger. As the guy leave also says yeah I'm definately not a pedofile. What the..I don't care who you are. I'm not going to find out the hard way. I don't trust anyone certainly not someone I barely know and my son doesn't know at all.

I agree. If this were me and even if I decided to take it, I would have tossed it out right away. You never know what people have in mind.

I've gotten that too, so you're not alone. Except in my case the guy was in his 80's and gave my daughter (who at the time was 8 months old) a sucker, she studied it for a minute before I took it from her and threw it in the nearest trashcan. I think he was just being nice, I really didn't think he was trying to do anything. He comes from a different time, where things were way different than how they are now.
