we adopted our little guy last year. we keep in contact with the birth mom by phone and visits. It seems to be working well. Is there anyone out there that has had an open adoption for a longer period of time. Just curious for whats in store down the road.

Hello and congratulations on your little blessing. I have a 2 year old that we adopted at birth through open adoption. The birth mom just wanted pictures at her request and for us to keep the same cell # just incase she would like to call. Birth Mom requested pictures for the first year, and now I have not heard from her for one year now. Maybe I will hear from her again in the near future. I did have her right a letter to my Daughter about why she felt the need to choose not to parent, and sometime when she is older I will share that letter with her.

My daughter is 3. Her birth mom lived with us until Hopemarie was almost 1 1/2. It was a very different kind open adoption. I knew the birth mother and her family almost 10 years. It became very difficult for her when Hopemarie began to have her own personality. She joined the Navy and has been back to see us. Hopemarie's birthday is a very difficult day and Mother's Day. I send her pictures. She is to visit us within the next week. I guess I still want her to feel like she made the right decision by placing Hopemarie with us. I talk to Hopemarie about her birth mother and we have pictures of her in Hopemarie's room. We don't want Hopemarie to forget that she loved her so much that she gave her to us to raise.

I am the birth Mother in an open adoption and just love it. Wish I could have the same with my kids parents.
