Does anyone else feel totally overwhelmed? How did you wander through the volumes of information available to us? Where do you start??? What is most important to start with; testing, meals, meds... Some direction would be outstanding!

Thanks in advance

Hi Erica!
How did your appointment with your endocrinologist go? A good diabetes team is very helpful in getting your health on track - eating the right foods & carb counting, getting you on the right meds & getting your doses in line, and being a good resource for you as you go through all of this. I have been a type 1 diabetic for 23 years & my team were invaluable to me, especially as I went through my first pregnancy. And now I have a healthy baby boy who I adore! Do you have any children? My hubby has always been a great support to me so I'm glad that you have a good support system there yourself! As Shannon already said, it is a major lifestyle change but as long as you watch what you eat, count carbs so you can take your meds, exercise & check your sugars, you'll be fine! And don't get discouraged by high sugars once in awhile! I get upset sometimes when I've had a bad day & my sugars are 250-350+! I just take a correctional dose of insulin & go on with my day! You'll have your ups & downs too! Just remember that your health is paramount & no one can take better care of yourself than you!

Hi Erica, It can be overwhelming - one of the most important thing to do as well as what Shannon said is to check your blood sugars - eat low carb foods or complex carbs, which simply means to choose "healthier" types of food and to get on Reliv. It will change your life as it did mine.

I have had type 1 for over 40 years was very "brittle" & I found something that made a HUGE difference in my life dealing with the diabetes. It is simple yet very complex. My blood sugars are SO MUCH better now and I feel great I have energy & don't need daily naps anymore-wow!   I have joined the company mission to help nourish the world. It is Reliv Intl. They have a new product called GlucAffect & you NEED to hear about it & get it right away. Send me a note & I can tell you more about it & answer any questions you have. Email; AnnetteReliv@aol.com  Products are quaranteed to help people with these issues plus more.

No problem, I know it can be scary. But, a lot can change, at least you know you have it and can now focus on doing something about it. :) Keep me posted!

Thank you so much for the help.  I go to see the endocrinologist next week.  My hubby has been so supportive.  I've mostly have been watching (or trying to) my  carb intake.  It's all very confusing.  I want to go to a dietician and diabetes education classes....I'm hoping that the endocrinologist will refer me to these things.  I will look for that book.  Again thank you so much for all the information!

Hi Erica,

I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy last year ( 2008) and I contorlled my diabetes by watching my food intake and by taking glyburide ( oral insulin). However, I was diagnosed type 2 in Jan 09. I did feel overwhelmed as well. Here is what I did... 1) I went to see an endocrinologist whose speciality is diabetes, 2) I got on janumet which is an oral insulion pill 3) I joined weight watchers to lose weight and got a buddy to do it with me 4) I went out and bought myself a book called the Field Guide to Type 2 diabetes which had tons of information on what to expect 5) I went and set up an appointment to meet with a nutritionist to follow me with my diet on weight watchers since I am a diabetic. 5) I also have complications from kidney issues from the diabetes.. so I got info from the Kidney foundation. Overall the best advise I can give you is to get all the information you can get on the disease, get VERY SERIOUS AND CHANGE YOURFLIFE SYTLE, GET OFF SUGAR!!! You also need to get real with your family about how diabetes is life changing and get their support. These are all things I have done to help myself. ALSO GET A DIABETIC MEDICAL NECKLACE... NEVER TAKE IT OFF. I also, test 4-5 times daily and keep a food journal which helps a lot. Good luck and if you have any questions let me know ~ It is overwhelming but know there are tons of people who have this disease and you arent alone!
