I was diagnosed with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Does anyone have any advice for me on how to avoid developing this disease? I want to be healthy for my kids and am willing to do anything. I weigh in at 158 pound, I am 5 ft 4in and 35 years old.

Excersise and eat small portions of low carb meals. If you feel tired take vitamen b & C Complex this helps me with my energy levels. Good luck and remember walk after every meal for 30 minutes.

Invest in yourself and hire a dietician/nutricianist. It'll pay for itself tenfolds in the long run. They'll be able to help you with better food choices, carb/calorie counting and help you educate your kids from having the same issues when they get older. It's not just about going on a diet and excercising, it has to be a lifestyle change for the whole family for you to be successful. I wish you the best of luck!

Hello Jana!

You can probably avoid diabetes through a well balanced diet that is moderately low in carbs & regular exercise. Losing weight will help too but you will probably be more successful if you can commit to a lifestyle change now - that is, act like you have diabetes before you get diagnosed with it! That means counting your carbs & avoid carb-rich foods, eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, target a good weight (healthy BMI) & eat responsibly to get there, exercise daily (brisk walking or running after your kids counts!), & drink plenty of water for healthy kidneys! Have you joined a support group? You also may want to check out diabeticmommy.com - it's a much larger group - to see if there are others who have gone through what you're going through! I hope this helped! I myself have had diabetes for 23 years & have a healthy baby boy who I adore & would do anything for! So trying to be healthy for your kids is a great motivator! Just remember that you'll be a better (and healthier) mom if you take the time to take care of yourself first! Best of luck to you!
