Our 10 month old has a really difficult time playing by himself for any period of time. I can't be 10 feet away or go to the bathroom (of course he's in a safe play place) without him freaking out. If I'm folding laundry he'll be ok for a few minutes since I'm right beside him but before the basket is finished he's pulling up on me and wants to play in my lap, I don't have to play with him just be there while he plays. Any suggestions on fostering his ability to cope with playing by himself? thanks in advance!

My oldest son, Ian was like this. I signed him up for Mommy's Morning Out at the local church 2 days a week, and this help big time. He cried of course the first month or so when I would drop him off, but after that he actually learned to play on his own and I knew he was in good hands. Of course do your research, but this will be good for him and you.

I would leave the room with him in a safe toy-filled area and come back every minute so he sees you and leave again. Do this for a while until he stops crying when you leave. When he stops crying he is either asleep or playing. He will eventually get distracted as all kids do. He will not notice you are gone. Dont go back where he will see you until he cries or you have to change activities. You can sneak your head in and check on him but thats what I did with my eldest now he could play hours by himself.
