Kidney Reflux

hey ladies, i am also new here. glad to have found a group for us!! my son luke, has bilateral hydronephrosis. the cause has not been determined... not reflux, maybe a upj or just an immature muscle in the ureter.

he had surgery at 3 months old, to correct the ureter on his kidney after i noticed a dramatic decrease in his urine. after a renal bladder scan and a mag 3, we were rushed into emergency surgery. his right kidney has seemed to be doing well (with marked improvement) but as of last month, it had taken a downhill turn. we are scheduled for another renal scan and mag 3 next month, then on to surgery if needed. i wish there were more resources and people with experience out there. i feel like my son is always "the worst case scenario" child.

Hi Kandis, I am also new to the group. My daughter is 7mnths old and had scans on her kidneys 5 months ago which showed one was more dilated than it should be, she is having follow up scans soon. She origionally had the scan because I had reflux as a child that was not discovered till I was 21 and had high blood pressure, as a result of the reflux I have one kidney that functions at about 90% and one that is so scarred it stopped growing when I was very small and has little function if any. I had no symptoms as a child just the occasional UTI, which I get alot of now.

It's a very scary thought that she may need surgery, but I guess the best thing is if there is a problem it will be found early. I hope your daughters goes well.

Hi, I'm also new to the group. My son just turned 3, April 3rd and had Stage 5 reflux, with partial duplication as well. He had surgery in May 2007, at just 1 year old. I completely understand what you're going through. Yes, this is a minor problem compared to others; however, when it's your child and they are faced with surgery... your world stops and they are your entire focus. The hardest part was the wait while he was in surgery, what made it easier is the staff and the hospital. They gave us multiple updates on how he was doing and were absolutely wonderful. Like I said, my son just turned 3, and he is doing incredibly well. He has to go in for routine checks, ultrasounds and vcug (which he is now accustomed to). I wish I could put your mind at ease, but it's easier said than done to just relax and trust all will go well. I hope your little girl does as well as my son. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
