ASD/VSD Closure -infant still not eating well

My 3 month daughter, Ruby just underwent open heart surgery to close her ASD and VSD. Prior to surgery we had her on an NG tube so she would keep gaining weight. After surgery, we had the expectation that she would just start sucking down bottles immediately. She has not shown ANY signs of changing her eating patterns and I'm concerned she'll have an NG tube for months.

We thought she wasn't eating well, prior to surgery, because she was tired and worn out. Now, after surgery, she is still eating the same way. Every doctor keeps telling us to give her time...but nothing has changed. I'm concerned she has a sucking problem or something because she'll suck and suck and suck but get MAYBE 10ml out of the bottle.

Anyone else go through this?

Hi my little boy has AVSD , surgery at 7mths, he's now five. I totally get your concerns re feeding . After his surgery we thought that he would start gulping down bottles, but in reality it can take some time for them to get the hang of feeding. It takes a lot of work on our part, but as your little one gets older you can move onto high calorie foods that will help with weight gain. All I wanted was to see him drink a bottle and eventually he did, but for us the light came on when realised that he may never do this and that we needed to try to move on from this. He loves his food eats loads but will always be small framed! Good luck on your journey.x

Hi there my daughter is 3 months old on Wednesday and we discovered she has a vsd about 3 weeks ago. she has to have Captopril medicine and frusomide medicine. also she is now on sma high milk to try and help her gain weight how big was your daughter when she had her surgery. Courtney is still only 8lb 8oz @ nearly 3 months old only gaining 2lb since birth.

my son had a vsd closure when he was 5 months old. and he would hardly eat for a month after. but after that month he started eatting better. but when we started him on solid food he was very picky. his doctor keeps telling me that its just his age. but he would rather not eat than have breads and stuff. his heart doc told me it was from the tubes in his throat during both surgeries to why he will not eat some stuff. good luck and i hope that your daughter heals quick and things get better for you.
