My Husband and I found out that our Son Gabe at age 18 months had a serious heart defect called ASD (Atrail Septal Defect) and 10 months later in Feb. 2009 he had to have open heart surgery. We were scared to death, but he made it through the surgery with no problems at all and 3 days later on Feb. 14th

Amy,

When I was 20 months pregnant I found out that my daughter had a VSD and would require surgical repair. After birth we learned that she also had an ASD. As we waited for her to get bigger so that the surgery would be easier she developed a block. At 3 months of age and only 8 lbs. She had open heart surgery to place two patches and a pace-maker on her heart. She is now 2.5 yrs old and doing great! She was in the hospital for about a week because she was having some issues eating post surgery (we now think that was due to a formula recall). Although it was very scary and at times I had my reservations about how she was going to do, I always knew she would be alright. Both my youngest sister and I had open heart surgery for VSD's as babies and we are in our mid 20's and 30's. It is so amazing the medical advances since the 70's and 80's.

Best of luck. I know that your son will be fine!

We were in the hospital for a week. When he comes out of surgery and is in I.C.U. it will be very scary to look at him with all the tubes and of course the scar. My advice is take it one day at a time. Take plenty of pictures too! My son was four years old when he had his surgery so we were able to explain everything to him, which helped him tremendously and the nurses were astounded at how well behaved he was with all the tubes and such. Good Luck Amy our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. You are assuring your son a long and happy healthy life!!

Our son was 1 month old when they found out he had ASD. He'll be having open heart surgery in 6 weeks-just after he'll turn 9 months old. We're scared to death too but they told us this is very low risk procedure. Do you have any helpful advise to give as we prepare for his surgery? How long were you in the hospital afterwards and how long did the surgery take? Thank you for any information you can pass along.

I found out about my son's ASD when he was 18 months old also. He is now a healthy 22 year old. You have many wonderful days ahead of you.
