Im new here. My son had a surgical repair of ASD on Oct.21st. The surgery it's self went well. When it was time to take the chest drain tube out the doctor couldn't get it out. It was stuck. He then called another doctor to find out what to do. That doctor told him he just needed to pull harder. Well the tube came out. We went home all was well so we thought. The drain site kept draining alot and it wasn't time to take the bandage off. We spoke with the doctor and he told us to take him to the ER in our home town to have chest xray done and to have the site redressed. Well when the doctor removed the dressing I noticed a stitch comeing out of the site. I talked to the surgeons nurse in Chicago and she said it sounded like a stitch that was holding the sturnum together and it needed to be taken care of. We were then told he needed to have surgery to have it removed. It sounds like when they pulled the chest tube out it got caught on that stitch and broke it. The day of 2nd surgery to remove the stitch they put him under the doc gave it a tug and it came right out. No need to cut him open again. Good thing right? Well now at the end of his sturnum there is a huge lump. They told up that it has fluid on it and will go down. Well I can feel a little fluid but its more bone then fluid. It makes me so sad to look at it and I cry everytime I see it. My question is to mothers of children after open heart surgery. Does anyones childs sturnum stick out at bit and if so does it stick out alot at the bottom? Also if it did has it gone away. Im very worried he will have to have another surgery and he is already tramatized from all this and im worried someone one messed up. Please help.

Thank you so much for your help,
Very worried mom
