Aloha,
Where will your husband be stationed? We are a Navy family and have lived on island for 17+ years. Do you have children? Hawaii is a great place to live. One thing for sure is that you have to have an open mind when you arrive. Hawaii, even though is a state, is set apart from the rest of the Mainland in the way people live and society acts. The island for starters is made up of a huge blend of all ethnicities, asians being prominent. The people live by the Aloha spirit, no rushing to get places, everyone is friendly (please do not listen to other people's experiences). You will either love it or hate it. But like anywhere you live, there are bad elements in all walks of life - you are the one to make the decision to entertain that element. Treat people like you want to be treated.
Traffic is a pain in the a** at times, but once again, if you decide to live on base you shouldn't have any problems. If you choose to love off, well then either find a place close to the base. Hawaii is also an expensive place to live. They do take care of the military out here so there are a lot of benefits that help ease with finances -use them! All base housing is privatized, so you will not get any BHA. If you live off base, dependig on what your spouse receives, there are nice apartments. IF you let me know where he will be stationed, I can give you some information for that area and help as much as I can.
You will be fine. I don't want to keep rambling, so send me your questions and I will try to be as helpful as possible. (Don't let the # of years enlisted scare you away...I am a very young 39 with two great girls 7 and 4) :)
Have a great day!
Mahalo

I hear you, Angel. We are going to be stationed at a new base within this year and it's my first time as well. We don't necessarily know which base yet. But we should be finding out sometime in March. So, it's pretty exciting, but very stressful. I hope all goes well for you.
