Hey all, just wondering... how do you feel when people unknowingly joke about OCD around you? and have you ever noticed how wrong the perception people have about what OCD is? all these jokes make people with OCD seem inherently crazy and different .. and it really blows it out of proportion... I have before mentioned to people that I actually have this disorder they are joking about and maybe they should watch what they say... but I dont want to be a bitch either lol. I wish you could sum oCD up in a sentence so we could better educate people on what this disorder actually is... but that would be really hard to do!

I think just as ADD is roughly three times more common for men, women get OCD. I think that the U.S. having a high divorce rate reinforces women's anxiety and men's 'drive' (another word for their mania.) Although, I really don't mind people bringing up my problems, I appreciate it, the reason that it's an issue is because I'm different and often don't notice, but if someone brings it up in a derogitory manner I respond similiarly (an effective allbeit immature defense mechanism.)

Alot of times I make a joke of my own OCD just to make myself better able to deal with it. (helps me not to be so angry about something that's set me off.) Before I knew I was OCD, I actually use to joke about one of my "Quirks" and say, "oh, don't mind me - that's just my OCD acting up!" then I would say, "I don't really have OCD - I was just teasin". So it was very ironic that when I searched out a therapist for Anger Management, (yelling at my family constantly) once we started discussing things - OCD is what came out from it. My father wasn't shocked one bit. Looking back on things, and learning more about OCD - now so much more of myself and my life and my choices and things makes sense. So when I think about someone joking about it - at least about the handwashing or the counting or not stepping on cracks (all of which are the most "famous" of the OCD characteristics) I do realize that 1. they aren't educated on it. and that 2. that's what the media has made it out to be...so it's not totally their fault. lastly 3. If I can find a way to make light of it as well - then I can probably find a way to get them to listen to me when it is time to explain more about OCD and have someone on MY TEAM when it comes to educating others about OCD.

I get a fair share of them especially from friends that knew me when I was not taking meds and ones that know me know with meds and seeing how different I am. I guess I don't really let it bother me because either way the jokes usually do reflect how I was and how I am now so hey let em laugh girl we all get tease a bit in some ways right!
