Overly Emotional Nine Year Old - Is There Something Wrong?

I am a single mom with only one son who will be 10 the end of July. His father lives close and is involved in his life. My son is doing fantastic in school and is a natural sportsman and is very good in both. My concern is that he is very hard on himself and he seems overly emotional. He cries at school if he does not understand something and he cries during sports if he doesn't "make the hit." I am wondering if it is normal for a boy his age to be this emotional or if there is something wrong with him. I don't remember taking life so seriously at such a young age...

Thanks for responding to my post Samantha. I appreciate your input and insight and will speak to his doctor next time he goes in for a visit regarding the testosterone level check.

He could be "coming of age". Maybe ask your doctor if there is a way to check his testosterone levels and see if they correspond with a boy his age. So many things could factor such as his sleep patterns, his diet, his friend circles at school.... You may not be the kind of mom that believes in medicines but if I were in your position I would consider an adrenaline supressor. It just slows down the activity of chemicals that give you that race like uptight feeling. He may be feeling the pressure of maintaining school, family and friends. You may not have felt it when you were his age but these days there is way too much that forces a child to feel responsible before his time.
