My oldest son was diagnosed at 6 mths and was prescribed a nebulizer at the time. He is now 12 and still needs it. My 5 yr old is also Asthmatic, but doesn't seem to have it as severe as my oldest. Your daughter may or may not outgrow this as she gets older. Find out if there is a family history of Asthma and look for things that may trigger it. Both of my sons have different triggers and treatment is different for the both of them.

They put my son on steroids for his asthma because his coughing/wheezing was so bad when he was about 2months old. Typically the steroids will fix it if it is asthma and that's one way they know it's asthma. His asthma was so bad that the steroids weren't helping so they thought it was Cystic Fibrosis (scary). They sent me to a Pediatric Pulmonologist (specializes in lung diseases for kids) he increased the steroids to a very high dose (above what the pediatrician will do) and then he started getting better (finally). The steroids aren't good for them over long periods of time, but it's better than scaring on the lungs. He's been on an "asthma action plan" ever since. He's slowly gotten better over time. When he gets a cold, that flares up his asthma. Also they found he had a little reflux which also flares up his asthma. He's slowly tapered off & quit some medications over time. We now have it under control. He said his advice trumps the pediatrician's. I would definately recommend being referred to a Pediatric Pulmonologist if one's in the area over an allergist! They are two different things.  Our pulmonologist said some kids will out grow asthma & others wont, but the key is to getting it under control. He also said in 100% of the cases of kids who out grew asthma, it did come back at some point in their life (as an adult).  Also- he just told me about my 9month old who had RSV & was taking nebulizer treatments that if the treatments are helping... it's asthma.

Ummm....  This is RSV season STILL!  My daughter had RSV last year and it scarred her lungs for life.  The first doctor I took her to said she may have asthma.  I am glad that I was concerned and took her to another doctor that admitted her straight to the hospital.  Your child should never have rattling in their chest and this be okay unless they have been formally diagnosed with asthma. Im just saying.

They think she has asthma because she has been coughing and rattling since december...I took her numerous times and they did nothing but I finally got a diff. dr. and he said he thinks it's asthma he doesn't want to send her to an allergist because he usually only sends older kids but if it's not asthma he thinks it's an allergy

My daughter was diagnosed at 9 months with asthma.  She is now 5 and has no signs of it.  What we noticed was the rattle in her chest.  She rattled so badly that we could feel it.   It was a pediatrician who diagnosed the asthma while we were seeing him for her flat head.  The other drs we saw did nothing about the rattle.

My 5 year old has had asthma since he was about 3 or 4 months old.

Why do they think she has asthma?

I have taken her to the dr. numerous times he has her on nebulizer treatments now but he still isn't sure if it's asthma or allergies we go back in two weeks to discuss whether the treatments are working or not...I just wasn't sure if there were any tell tale signs of asthma thanks again

Like Amy said listen for the rattling and take her to the doctor. That's how I found out about my son's when he was 3 months old. I thought it was just a cold.

One of the main things you can look for in a little one in her skin beneath her ribs pulling in when she breathes, that indicates a problem. This is how I knew my guy had it at 4 weeks old. Also if she is wheezing when she breathes. You can also put your ear against her back and listen for any rattling in her lungs. The sounds will come from there, not her throat if it is athsma. I hope you can figure this out.
