Not a mom but was searching for answers. Just moved in with my fiance and her son is up until early morning hours watching tv or video games. I'm talking 2-5 am! Need advice. Please help! She only gets upset when I bring up the subject of an earlier bedtime.

Wow, it seems so many kids stay up so late! Mine are 9 and 6 and go to bed at 7:30 (during school). The 9 yr-old can read for a half hour.
I think it's important for two reasons, they need lots of sleep at this age and I need my day to end!

Kids that age need about 10 hours of sleep. So count back from the time he needs to be up to figure out what time he should be in bed..

My 9yo went to bed at 8pm! so I am no help! My 5 yo goes to bed at 6:30 most nights but I will let her stay up to 7pm sometimes but only in the summer. My oldest is now 11yo and her bed time is still 9pm. She needs her sleep and is sooooo grumpy if she doesn't get enough sleep.

When I was a kid, my mom gave me a book and a lamp and told me to get in bed and read. She really moniter when I should exactly go to bed, I do the same with my kids today both 11 and 6

I try to get my 9 yr old in bed (during school) by 8pm but it's usually closer to 8:30pm. I get him up for school around 6:30am and he's very slow moving. I figure if he is asleep by 9 then he will get around 10 hrs of sleep.

Summer time I usually let them stay up late. Normally during week 10(if they haven't really ticked me off), maybe 11 on weekends. Son will just wander off to his room when he gets tired. The girls will fall asleep in living room sometimes. On occasion they are up till 12 or later. Even during school year on weekends they are allowed to stay up late. Son will get up early no matter what

All three of mine(9,7 and soon to be 5) go to bed at 8:30, it has always been that way. The girls share a room so occasionally I would keep Susie up for about 1/2 hr longer since she's a kindergartener now, no more staying up late.

It depends on when he wakes up, or you want him to. As long as he gets 8 hours of sleep, and he does well with it, whatever works for him.

When my now nearing 11 year old (July 7) turned 9 years old his bed time became 9PM...it was the same for my other children when they were his age...If your guy is not still sleepy in the morning upon waking ( at his routine time) then he is ready for the change....(you may want to give his lil' body a good week to adjust...LOL

When its school time they all go to bed at 8pm. That is my 12, 9 and 5 yo. My 12 year old does his required reading when he goes to bed, my 9 yo does that earlier with me, but she does read a bit and is usually ready for bed around 8:30. Now summertime, bedtime is 9pm for all. My oldest does still reads and sometimes I have to take his book when I head to bed.

My 8 year old daughter goes to bed at 9pm on school nights and between 9-10pm on the weekends....and my 13 year old goes to bed at 10pm on school nights but we let him stay up till 11pm or a bit longer on weekends especially if he wants to watch a movie or whatever. They are both early risers regardless the time.

Hi there i have the same problem with the lighter nights. mostly with my 9 yr old son. its harder getting him 2 whine down. when the dark nights are here, i dont seem 2 have a problem. the clocks going forward and back really mess them up dont u think.

My children are 10 and 8. They go between 830-9pm. I would put my 8 year old to bed at 8pm but she plays up as she insists on going to bed the same time as my 10 year old. Personally I think you should go on your child as when they feel tired. Any later then 9pm I think is far to late and before 730pm is to early.

When I was at school I went to a boarding school, and the day pupils were 'advised' to follow the same bedtime routine, we were woken at 7.30am

Ages 7-8, 6.45pm with lights out at 7.15pm
Ages 8-9, 7.15pm with lights out at 7.30pm
Ages 9-10, 7.30pm with lights out at 7.45pm
Ages 10-11, 7.45pm with lights out at 8.00pm
Ages 11-12, 8.00pm with lights out at 8.15pm
Ages 12-13, 8.15pm with lights out at 8.30pm

15 minutes later for everything on Friday and Saturday
15 minutes earlier for everything on Sunday (with the exception of 7-8 yr olds, bedtime same as weekdays)

1. I have my kid have two different bedtimes. On TRS he goes to bed at 8:00 but may read until 8:30. On MWF he goes to bed at 8:30. My kids have an early bus so we get up at 7 during the week and usually 6 am on Weekends.

2. You can always alter the bedtime based on sleep and mood. When they have been grouchy I will send him to bed earlier because I tell him he must be tired to be so grouchy.

3. You can change the bedtime based on special events where they need more sleep.

4. You can also have a special night where they get to stay up longer, say 9 ish to watch a movie with you or something.

I put my 9 yr old to bed at 830, he can watch tv or read till 9, then its lights out. Hes usually asleep before that though, it just makes him feel like he has a later bedtime! it seems to work,hes up by 7 for school. Weekends Im a bit more lax and dependong on what were doing its anywhere from 9-11.

My daughter goes to bed at 8:30 but she doesn't usually fall right asleep. I always had a hard time falling asleep as a kid, so I understand and I let her read or color in her room but she's usually asleep before 10. In the summer I let the kids (will be 9 and 5 this summer) stay up till 9 or so and they get to sleep in. My daughter's ADHD social worker said sleeping by 10 p.m. (if getting up at 7 a.m. for school) is plenty of sleep. I hope this helps.

My son is almost 9. We have him in bed by 9, no later than 930. In the summertime I let him stay up as long as he wants, but he usually conks out by 10 so it's not an issue :)

We do 8:30pm for our 7 year old daughter from Sunday night to Thursday night for school nights and non school nights she is up until 10pm when we all go to bed.... and sometimes things happen when she will have to stay up later on a school night and she is tired the next day but she still manages and those are the days I am super glad she is gone to school cause she is crabby lol

I have an 8yr old who i put to bed between 730 & 8 pm. Normally she is asleep by 830pm. My daughter needs to be up at 6am ( morning care, as i work), so this bedtime suits our family. She need to sleep, so no 9pm bedtime for her, at the moment......

I let my 9 (almost 10) yr old stay up until 9. I moved it from 8:30 to 9 a few months ago when he asked. I let him know that it was a privilege and he had to show me he could handle having a later bed time. He manages to wake up at 6:45 and get everything done in the morning so the bed time has worked.

My daughter will be 9 in July. During the school year we make her bedtime 9-9:30. It seems like an ok time for her. She seems rested in the morning and not too tired/crabby.

my older two kids are nine and ten... they lay down for bed at around 845 and are allowed to read in their beds until 915. this lets them stay up lil later than their younger sister and also the reading makes them very sleepy :)

A good bedtime for a 9 year old is 9:00 p.m. if they are exspected to be awake at 6:30 a.m. for school; They need 8 to 10 hours of continous sleep for optimal rejuvenation while they rest.

Honestly when we get everything done....I prefer them to go to bed at 8:30, but that is in perfect worl. We don't get home until 6:30...It depends on the child. My oldest can stay up and wake up ready to go. MY youngest that is a diffrent story. I could put her in bed at 5:30 and still have a hard time getting her up. I would just try extending the bed time for a couple of days to see how each on adjust. Mine share a room and are the same age as yours.

as a mom and a teacher. I prefer the 8:30 to 9:00 bed time for all school age children up to high school age.The more sleep they get the happier healthier they are. they also learn better on more sleep. what I do with my children is who are 7 and 4 is 8: 30 Monday thru Friday and then on Sat they get to stay up till 10. good luck with what ever you decide should be the bedtime for your 9 year old.

What time do your children need to get up in the morning? Mine have to be up by 6:30 to catch a 7:10 bus everyday. The best bedtime is one that will allow your child plenty of sleep to feel rested and to perform well in school. We have an 8:00-8:30 bedtime in our house. It seems to work well.

Hi I have a 7 yr old and a 10 yr old sharing a room and they both go to bed at 7.30. My 13 and 15 yr olds go to bed at 10.30. They need to have sufficent rest for school, on a weekend the younger ones usually stay up to about 8.30 definitely no later! I have never had a problem with this

making sure she is still getting about 10 hrs of sleep at night...so if she has to get up at around 730 for school. ..u could maybe let her stay up til 930 but maybe back off gradually and say 9 to start with as bedtime for your 9 year old.

Hi Ashley , I have 2 boys who also share a room and they've had the same bed time (8:30) until this past Feb when the oldest turn 13 and was officially a teenager, he now goes to bed at 9:30 ,and there really is no best time , it has to be according to your son and how many hours a sleep he needs , some kids need more that others or they'll be cranky all day, so try different times and see what works best for your son and good luck picking a bedtime for your 9 year old.

I have a 7 and 9 soon to be 10 year old who share a room right now both go to bed at 8pm but they start school earlier than most at 7:45 am. I will probably start letting the older go to bed later after he turns 10. But not too late as he is tired in the am and I have to wake him. I think 9 pm is a late enough bedtime for a 9 year old but will probably start with 8:30pm.

To get the best out of school, a schoolchild (including teenagers) usually needs to sleep about 10 hours every night. When deciding on a bedtime for a 9 year old, bear in mind what time your child has to get up and how long it takes him to get ready for school.

My 9 year old daughters bedtime is 10 and she is up at 7 for school and she is fine, but every kid is different. Although, I think 8:30 is too early a bedtime for a 9 year old, my 2 year old goes to bed at that time. Good luck
