Child goofing off before bedtime every night?

My daughter gets like that but she ADHD and it is part of her process.I know this sounds stupid but try sticking to a schedule. it helps with my daughter she goes in the shower at 7 in bed at 8 and tv off at 9 we do this every night on weekends I push it all back by an hour or 2. It is always the same though bath/ shower then in bed and tv off sometimes u need to give them the option on what to watch but u need to be firm

Sounds like my 6 1/2 year old son! He plays every trick in the book to delay going to sleep. Problem solved: I let hubby deal with bedtime.

Sharon, I agree. She has anearly enough bed time. Kids are different so this may help or it may not. When I have my son read a book to me (he's still learning to read) it seems to get him a little more tired and ready to be still. When I read to him in bed, he falls asleep sometimes after 5 mins sometimes after 30, but it usually does the trick. TV OFF of course.

Teresa - My step daughter goes to bed at 8pm (she will be 7 next month). I would feel bad putting her to sleep when it is still day light out :--(

Sounds like an earlier bedtime would help. My son gets rebellios when he is over-tired.

hi emily the boys havent had phenergan for about 2 months now and its also used as an anti sickness medication for travel sickness. I dont give it every night but if they've had a couple of hours sleep when they come home from school and they are bouncing around before bed then i think about giving it to them or otherwise let them bounce about in their bedroom until they fall asleep on their own (with the bedroom door closed) as they can't open the door yet., we do keep an ear out for them and check on them before going to bed.

you still need to be careful giving medication to go to sleep because eventually your boys wil become dependent on it

If our two boys are sleepy when they are downstairs and we put them to bed then they start laughing and bouncing around we either leave them to fall asleep on their own, and check on them when we go to bed (both boys have disabilities cp and severe developmental delay) if they get to roudy in their bedroom we give them some medication called phenergan which is a antihistamine which can be bought over the counter from chemists, and within 5 mins they are out for the count but we dont give it every night (only when we think they need it)

my children both don't go to bed right away. i have the rule that they have to stay in the bed unless they have to go to the bathroom. they also get two stories a piece and cuddles and kisses. if they get out of bed after i put them to bed they get a consequence. spankionf mostly. while corporal punishmnet is contreversial whatever you come uip with for dicipline needs to be consistant

I have a 4 year old that does this. He plays around in the covers, demands something to drink, won't fall asleep in his own bed. We try to be firm with him to go to sleep, but we get so tired that we give up too easily. And of course, his 2 year old sister has to do everything that he does, so it can be twice the battle at night. I like the bedtime routine, checklist, or $ incentives. I'll have to try this out too. Good luck and hopefully when school starts our kids will be too tired to play around at bedtime. I have to admit I fight going to bed at times when I've got to head to a stressful job in the morning.

Ilene: that is ideal and has to be more effective... nothing is perfect but this is the best one!!! Ignoring them wasn't working that much anymore and, lately, my 4 year old is "needing" to go to the bathroom and then "wants" something to eat. When I give her something she takes a bite and throws it away. At least my 7 year old is behaving!!!!

My seven year old hides in the bathroom claiming he "needs" to be in there. He thinks stuff is funny to him as well. We do a bedtime chart that is tied into his allowance and if he misbehaves he loses that magnet for the day and a dollar of allowance money. It is the only thing that has worked for us and is not perfect yet.

It has happened to me. I have two daughters and they laugh about everything, talk, and want different things right when I put them in their beds. What has worked for me is ignore what they do telling them, firmly, that they have to sleep. If it gets out of control, just tell her she will have some privileges taken away the next day.
