My oldest daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and possible ODD a little over a year ago. We havent put her on meds yet but her teacher thinks she may need them because she can't focus or attend to tasks and she's having verbal outbursts. I don't know what to do because I see it at home when we're doing homework but I didn't think it was that bad. What do you guys think?

my son has had his tonsils addnoids removerd and tubes in his ears... He is as ADHD as they come. _as I am also_ He is on vyvanse. It does help with the fidgiting and constant wanting to wrestle in the floor with something. his grades are alot better. my only issue is eating. he sleeps fairly well but it is a MUST that the meds are given EARLY early morn. so they have tinme to wear off before bed. now with all that being said. I struggle on a daily basis giving this to him.but I do see that he needs it. Im hoping in the near future he will learn to focus on his own he is a truly good kid just HYPER-he loves to play has friends -just cant focus-

Have you checked her sinuses and Tonsils first. My 7 year old was exhibiting all the classic ADHD signs except he absorbed all the information that was being shared. He would always have straight As and was a rather creative child. Turns out he needed his tonsils taken out and a mild issue with his sinuses fixed. The last few weeks of this school year after we took care of these issues he was a totally different kid who sat still watched movies payed attention in class. He still gets straight As but he isn't causing the rest of the class problems now. I would suggest looking into these before you assume that ADHD is the true cause.

Personally I think if the child truely has ADHD the only one that suffers from not medicating them is the child. My 8 year old was diagnosed at the end of her Kindergarden year. During her Kindegarden year I was at the school in the principal's office and having meetings with the teacher and principal at least once a month. Since we have medicated her, just finishing her 2nd grade year I only got 2 phone calls the whole year. She is on Concerta, sees the school counselor once a week and she also has an outside therapists that she sees when she needs to.

My 8 year old step-daughter was tested at the end of a VERY trying Kindegarden year, of course she tested postitive for ADHD and ODD, they put her on concerta which has been working great. She also went to counsling once a week for about a year along with weekly sessions with the school counselor. I feel that if the children REALLY do have ADHD the meds are the best thing for them because they are the only ones who really suffer in the end. It is a disease that needs to be treated. I have not been called to the principals office since she was diagnosed and put on meds@

My son is 8. Every year in his school we have had such a hard time with him in school in every aspect. I have goten him tested and had him talk to counslors and everything. Finally i decided i had to do something. He has been on adderall xr now for about 2 months and hes doing so much better at school and at home. I noticed right away so did his teachers. His teacher even gave him student of the month for this month its the first time he has ever gotten that. He is so proud and feels so good about him self and what he can do now. In my oppinion it has made a world of difference. Just becaue i have him on meds now doesnt mean i will always keep him on. His doc said it was fine if i only gave him the meds the days hes in school. So when hes on break or on the weekends hes not medicated.

I had my 6 yr old daughter tested for ADHD last year becasue she was having suc ha hard time in school, she couldnt focus yelling in class walking around when ever she felt like it screaming in the halls you name it she did it! and after she was tested and the doctor did determine she had ADHD we tried some behavior modifications and changed how we helped her do homework but it still didnt help in school so we decided to put her on a medication. very low dose and it has made a world of difference our child from last year to this year is like a new kid. she is reading so much better able to do homework on her own and work indepoendtly in school! we just got her report card and all her grades have come up. it was the best descion we could have made... i was very against medication for her but after i read into and now see the results it was the best thing we coulod have done for her!

I have a son with ADD and he is on meds. They really helped a lot. We didn't want to at first and tried other therapy but the meds made a huge difference in him. Don't take medical advice from a teacher. Go to your pediatrician and discuss it with them. Get as much info as you can

Hello:) My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was in Kindergarten. We weighed our options and decided to put him on meds. Kin, 1st, and 2nd he was on the same med. It worked ok but we had a few problems with it. Last summer we took him off (consulted his dr. 1st of course). We let him start school without any meds at all. the 1st week it was all ok...until he got used to his surroundings then he started having major problems. So we went back to the Dr and we now have him on Metadate and it has worked wonders for him!!! His teacher can't tell us enough how GREAT he is doing and we all have even noticed an improvement in his handwriting :) His grades have also improved and he has been able to accomplish some of the timed quizes in math that he had problems with before the meds. We really didn't see as much of it at home with my son either. It wasn't until i was in his class taking with his teacher that i got to see how class goes. With my son it seems to be worse when he is ina group of people. It's like he is nervous and doesn't know what to do with that feeling. Things could be different at home because there aren't as many distractions.

I work for a pediatrican who specializes with children with ADHD/ADD. They have a new drug out (Intuniv) that isn't a stimulant and have gotten good reviews about it. Check with your child's doctor. I believe if your child is ADHD, she needs help from the medicine to be able to pay attention and stay on task.
