My 9 year old son has autiam and adhd he is a big hand full He does not have meds as everyone i know at his school on meds have terriavble side effects as i said to his physiatrist while he sleep at night we will just have to cope in the day it is very hard cause he can be very angry and violent but there are many times when he is loving and caring all the books say an average child is 95% good even a child with adhd so 5% is really not that bad it can just feel it at times. What i say to any parent with a child with specials needs is you can do it it is hard but for them to just show you love can make it all worth it .

You need a medal to be able to cope with more than one child in the family with it. The meds assisted my son for most of the time but he wanted off of them about a year ago. He functions well most of the time but occasionally you wonder if the meds would make more of a difference

My eldest son(13) has adhd and was medicated at the age of 5. He is now off the meds but they keep him on endep. He constantly upsets the other children and displays antisocial behaviours within the family unit. He can make life one big test after another at times as because he is the oldest he sets the bar for the other children to follow. It makes it hard but we do cope.

I have 7 kids. 6 out of the 7 are ADD/ ADHD. (or been diagniosed with it) 3 are now 23, 20, 18. Only 1 chooses to continue meds. The last 3 are under 16. I have been against meds. (In the beggining 15 years ago) I see a complete difference with some of the kids when not taking meds. My opionion (and not worth a nickle but) Would you keep meds from a child diagniosed with diebeties, asthma, cancer? I know when my kids have not taken their meds. It is Never an excuse for unipropriate behavior. But I also believe in never denying my children what they need to function. No differnt then someone with an inhaler.

I have 7 kids. 6 have been diognosed ADD/ADHD. Each one has dealt or deals with it differently. Ryan is now 23, off meds has a job but was a battle getting him to where he is. Jayke still lives at home going to college, still on Adderall and has a tough time with acting his age. about 5 years socialy behind. Sadie 18 stopped taking meds at 14 (was on for 1/2 year) Says it makes her feel not herself. But she has kept up grades, has a job since 14, and graduating in a month. Andrew is 16, but also autistic so not sure which behavior comes from which diognosis. Aaron is 14, A miniture Jayke. He is having a huge probplem with "remembering". He gets VERY weepy and emotional when he doesn't take his medication. Athena is 11, She too is autistic so again not sure which behavior is which. All the kids but Ryan and Sadie are on Adderall (different milligrams) So hang in there, each child is different, in degree. If you ever need to talk I have had 23 years of experience. Some things have work some have not. Just remember having Add is not an excuse for bad or negative behaviors. That was our biggest battle. Good luck

Hey Debbie, My daughter who is 11 has ADHD and we have been treating her for it since she was in the 2nd grade, about 4-5yrs now. My son who is 5 now seems to be heading up the same road. Your not alone. There are tons of support groups, doctors and even counslers who work specifically with children who have ADHD.
( http://www.ednews.org ) This website can get you started. Good luck and feel free to write me if you have questions.
