I had skin reaction Tom's of Maine so be careful if your child has skin sensitivities. The cotton deodorant at Trader Joe's was fine except it wasn't effective for me but probably would be okay for many children.

Tom's of Maine is another all natural chemical free product that works even better than the speedstick I recommended earlier...had to switch my youngest to that this summer...

The ABSOLUTE best deodorant is neosporin antibacterial gel at any local drug store. I am sensitive to most products, they have made my underarms itch, red and the worst peeling skin. It has been a huge embarrassment to walk around with stinky arm pits and no recourse. Even after I showered and scrubbed, I still had some odor. It was awful! I tried neosporin two weeks ago and I am ecstatic. I use the gel, vaseline type feel. I have not tried the cream, it may not stick as well. I use a very tiny amount and it works incredibly well. No issues of sensitivity!!!!! I am so grateful I have to share and hope I can end someone elses misery as well. Yeah! to neosporin!

hygiene and habits are a great idea, don't you think? I do! My grandson started using men's shampoo/body wash and loved the scent. We gave him a stocking stuffer at Christmas of the scented anti antiperspirant. Learning early how to apply just right amount of a product, when the actually think you know a little something is better than forcing them to get something for underarms that reek at age 12. Just so you know, deodorant is only used to mask odor, not stop sweat glads from creating those sticky wet marks under arms. So deodorant is simply scented arm pit cologne :)

If you use a dye/scent free type, like speed stick unscented, you'll be fine. Both my boys (teens) got contact dermatitis from using that god-awful "axe" brand. We switched them to unscented Speed Stick, (after 2 weeks of daily soaping, drying, and hydrocoritsoning the area) and neither has had a problem since.
The main thing is to avoid too many chemicals, which by using unscented/ undyed products is not too difficult

I think it definately depends on the child, and even at this age it's hard because they develop differently. My oldest dd started going through prepuberty at 8 (she's 9 now). The curves started coming, along with the body odor. So she's been usisng it, but we get the degree teen deoderant. My son is 7, is also quite a bit bigger than his classmates, is also starting to sweat and get the bo. There is a time when showering is not enough. As with everything else in life, the first thing used may not work. Some skins are more sensitive than others, and you may need to try various products.

My son is only seven and a good bath is enough for him. The hormones haven't hit yet. But now he loves copying daddy, so he'll get a spray under the arm every now and then, just to be like daddy. Makes his day.

Latasha Sandoval - I'm not sure where you get your information, but meat does not cause BO! BO is a result of bacteria that live on the skin breaking down sweat into acids. And that is all.

If your child stinks, then yes, it is okay to use deodorant. Deodorant is not harmful (I know of no one who has died from using it!) and these people who think it is, probably smell horrible! LOL I'm just kidding, folks - don't get all mad! Just teach your child that 1 or 2 swipes under each arm is usually sufficient, don't over do it, and everything should be fine! Good luck!

I say yes! My son would come home so stinky on P.E. Days. I wasn't sure if it was him or the material from the uniform shirt (new shirts this year at the school, when new they sort of smelled). I told him to wash well each night, still stinky. I finally broke down and bought the mildest deodorant I could find. I also didn't push the matter, I just told him to use if he remembered. I didn't expect to use it on him at 8, especially since his 10 yr d brother doesn't seem to need it, but he's always the sweaty active one. Talk to your doctor and see if there's 'natural' stuff out in the market. He'll eventually need it In a couple of years. And you definitely don't want him teased.

I would say yes, as long as it is a mild form for sensitive skin perhaps from avon or even a teen deodorant. Sometimes kids need i and sometimes they just wanna be like the people they look up to. It is important to teach them NOT to share this.

Yes as long as you use a sensitive skin deodorant. Some kids need it earlier than others and some just want to be like the people they look up to. My 6yr old daughter and 4yr old son both use it.

I let my 6yo once in a while but only because she has psoriasis in her armpits and when she sweats a lot and she is in a flare up from it, it itches and the deoderant helps with that for some reason. If your child has BO then I say let them use it cause you dont want them to smell but find one with low amounts of the main active ingredients.

According to our Dr. yes. Although we only apply it on gym class days or really hot days. Try to find plain deoderant if you can w/o anti-persperant.

I would recommend apple cider vinegar as a natural choice for your child. Many products on the market contain things like proplyene glycol which is antifreeze. It is necessary for a child's pores to breathe and that cannot happen effectively with traditional deodorant of any kind. Especially antiperspirants which stop perspiration. You may be best serving your child by purchasing a small spray bottle and filling it with apple cider vinegar. Have your child spray underarm after a shower and let it airdry (be warned it smells until it airdries, but not once it dries). Your child will not smell like vinegar n will be the underarm will be allowed to breathe properly. Also, as two other writers suggest, you may also consider changing your child's diet to limit animal products to 3oz per day and to increase fruits and vegetables to, at or above the daily recommendations.

we bought my son an unsented mild deoderent when he was about 6 1/2 we encouraged him to use it but did not force it. he has always has been a sweater right from the age of 3, by the time he hit grade one we would notice a ver bad BO when we picked him up from school, we talked to the dr an it was her that finaly convinced us to go ahead with it. that said if the child needs it they need it there are alot of chemical free natural even cristal products out there find what works best for you and her and go for it, as i tell my son i would rather be honest and tell you you smell and need it because im doing it out of love the kids at school will tell you to be mean

Absolutely NOT! Way too many chemicals in it. Change the diet. I did it with my son and it works.

If he needs it, yes. Most 6 year olds don't need it, but some do. My girls started using deodorant at 8.5 though. Tom's is a good, natural brand, but it's expensive.

I don't see anything wrong with using deodorant on a child...but i wouldn't use that strong stuff like what adults and grown men use...try using some of those roll on deodorants that avon sells...they are not as strong as those sold in drugstores and they have a light scent and antiperspirant to stop sweating and BO...if you are too scared to use that...try using just baking soda under the child's arm...baking soda will absorb some of the perspiration but it would stop the smell so much...

don't know why it would be an issue as long as it gets washed off and reapplied regularilly and I would use one of the less scented ones to decrease chance of skin irritation. Everyone needs/starts using such products at different ages. I have not met a 6yo that needs it with regular bathing, but don't think it should harm her. There are people who are against deodorant, may wanna research harm from it on the internet, but personally, I think they try to find issues with everything these days. So, its your call, and good luck!

if she/he hasn't begun to get a lil underarm odor i say no...if she/he has start out with baby powder under the arms first to see if that will help if not then move to a very mild form.

My now 9 year old daughter has been using deodorant since she was 6. She never had a problem with it, nor did she get made fun of for having BO.

My son is sitting under me RIGHT this minute with something called contact dermatitis in his left armpit. He found my deodorant and got it smeared ALL under his left arm before I found him and took it away. By the end of the day, his little armpit was BRIGHT red...you could feel the fever in it...and it burned. He cried and cried. The only way I got him to sleep was to put hydrocortisone cream on it and then lay there beside him running my fingers through the cream caressing his skin and blowing on it gently.
I took him to the doctor for it two days ago. There's nothing more I can do for it. No super medicine to clear it up overnight. All I can do is cuddle him a lot and run my fingers through the cream on his arm. I have about seven days of this left.
Please don't do this to him....or yourself.
Here's a pic of what his armpit looks like this morning:

I would say no! Read up on the chemicals that are used in commercial brand deoderants. Instead, get him on some liquid chlorophyll which will cleanse him internally and remove much of the odor causing bacteria resulting in bo. Fresh fruits and vegetables help to cleanse the body as well. It's not deoderant that our children need, its a clean body, inside and out. BO is a result of undigested meat rotting in the body.
