Do you plan on having your child learn a second language?

Hi! My kids are 3 and 5, and I would love them to learn another language (they already speak Greek with their father). What age do people think is ideal for their kids to learn another language, and would they try to teach it themselves, or sign their child up for a class?

Thanks!
Lisa

You know that 75 % of world population talk more than 2 languages. The number of languages in the world is amazing and allot of them are disappearing. I am from Venezuela and speak English and Spanish. We moved to USA in Dec 2008. My boys are taking English very fast. We want to have bilingual kids (not only speech, read an write both languages correctly). If they want to take another language is welcome. You know that in allot of countries children take two or more language. USA is the only country talking about English only. If you go to Belgium, children finish their education talking in 3 different languages: Flemish, French and English. Speak different languages is a competitive advantage. Look for it.

We started teaching my son (now almost 5) at 3 Chinese and Spanish. He is in preschool for both languages and loves it! He sings along to all of the songs and uses the phrases in his everyday speech!

My daughter (almost 3) has been around Chinese and Spanish (though games we play and videos we watch) since birth. She just started Chinese school at 2.5 and loves it!

When we have a third, I plan on introducing both languages as soon as he/she is born with music, shows and games!

Good luck!

Yes, a second language is a good idea. Actually any age is a good age to start but they will pick it up eaiser the younger they are..........

The younger the better for learning 2nd, 3rd etc languages. My children are 11 and 13 are in French Immersion and love it. They started in Gr.1 but only because we did not have access to it earlier. My youngest was learning Spanish from Dora the Explorer and using it correctly at the age of 4. As long as it is fun they will learn quickly and learn other languages quicker and easier.
