My 6 year old son is terrified of riding his bike without training wheels. He wants to try because all his friends can do it, but is afraid he will get hurt. He puts on all sorts of pads but is still scared. My husband tries to teach him but gets frustrated when our son won't even try to ride.

Any suggestions?

hy! my son had a "bogie wheel" - it´s without pedals and the kids have to run to go and keep balance - after using this for 2 years, one day he take his normal bike and he ride it perfektly!

My son was six when we switched from regular training wheels to the kind of training wheels that are lifted off the ground, at an angle. The point was to provide support only when you start to lose balance.
My son tried to rely on them as extra wheels. He had a big crash and a bloody swollen knee, and has since refused to get on a bicycle. That was 2 1/2 years ago.
This spring we intend to try again, no training wheels. I think we'll go with Danielle's method.

My son was near impossible to teach, gosh I think he was 8 before he ever really learned. We tried everything he just didn't have the balance he needed, but one day while we were inside he just got on and road off. I remember what my dad did for me, he left my training wheels on but every couple of days without my knowledge he would raise them off the ground slightly. They where still there to give me comfort and they gave support if my balance wasn't all there. In the end they weren't even touching the ground anymore, nor were they providing me any support. I had no idea and I was ecstatic to find out I was riding all along by myself. It might be something good to try since your son is terrified of riding without his training wheels, he won't even know the difference. Good Luck!!

I remember my dad running after me holding my seat as I rode my bike in the backyard. That's the approach I took with my son. I held his seat and ran beside him. I told him I'd try taking my hand off for a bit and he just took off. I was glad it was an easy thing for him to do. Hope he gets over the fear for you. Try on grass it's slower and softer if he falls (once the snow if gone).

HI,

My daughters and I taught my son to ride his bike last summer and it was easy, take off all training wheels, get your partner or friend to stand a small didtance away (10 Feet) from you and push your child towards them, turn him around your partner or friend then pushes him back to you, keep doing this and increse the space between you both and next thing you know he is peddeling him self just to reach you, be patient with lots of high fives and other rewards.... now I can't get my son off his bike even in the ice?? he is a wired kid.
