I have a 5 year old who dose not know any of her letters. She can reconize her name but will not tell us what the letters are. I have gone over them with her several times and she just keeps saying "I don't know" when you ask her to tell you what a letter is. I have tried flash cards, games, and she has been in preschool for 2 years now. What do I do?

One of the things we used at home was a magnetic fridge toy. Here is the description The Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set by LeapFrog transforms the refrigerator into a learning center! With 26 magnetic letters and a magic reader that recognizes which letter is placed inside, Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set inspires preschoolers to develop language, exploration, creativity and motor skills. Children can place one of the letters into the magnetic letter reader to hear fun phonics songs that teach the letter name and sound - and everything attaches securely to the refrigerator! Plus, press the music note button to hear the Alphabet Song! Recipient of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award. Phonics have never been more fun with this LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set!

Hello there, have you tried playing a shopping game - where you give your child a flashcard and send her shopping around the home for something beginning with that letter. You don't say how or what scheme you are trying to teach her the sounds. I have taught children using the Jolly Phonic scheme, where each sound has an action and the children really seem to take to this.

I am not a teacher, I am a teaching assistant in Early Years working with children aged 4-5 years.
