She just graduated kindergarten but I am NOT confident that she is at par with the rest of her class.. I know that if she is to get through 1st grade without too much headache and difficulty I have a lot of work to do with her over the summer, but WHAT? What do I practice with her on? Writing Abc's some more? Writing numbers? What else? And how to make it fun for her and me. I'm not so good at fun ideas.

My daughter will also be in first grade. There is a big range for kids going into 1st grade. Just remember that some kids can read but most only know a handful of sight words. The best thing is to read to them every day. Our school recommends just 10 min. a day. We play math games while we are shopping. If your daughter enjoys sitting a writing let her do worksheets. My daughter is just starting to write real words to stories and then she illustrates. They need the time to scribble to get their ideas out on paper and then they can tell us the story. Just remember that some kids can read but most only know a handful of sight words. Have fun with her and trust that if the teachers didn't think she was ready they would have expressed their concerns earlier.

I know that some school districts actually post what is expected but reading through the scholastic suggestions, it seems like a good place to start. (I am going to use it myself since my daughter starts 1st grade this fall also.) Good luck!
