No it is not common, I know it must be frustrating.  My children now have really strong immune system because I switched stores to shop for safer alternatives.  You can learn more at www.LiveTotalWellness.com/TEXAS.

I have learned so much over the past 4 years working with a Wellness Company from home and love to share with other moms.

just like any person, if you are introduced to a new strain of illnes you never had before, your body needs time to learn to fight it. I remember visiting my husband in CA (we live in PA) and i was sick every month for 18 months with colds. same thing happened when i quit smoking. kids goign to school or daycare for the first time must also have time to adjust. One thing I learned when I was student teaching - WASH YOUR HANDS all the time. Germs are on papers they hand in, pencils they pick up, the desks, chairs and chalk. So many times, they dont wash their hands before they eat. Stick a little bottle of hand sanitizer in his/her backpack and tell them to use it before they go to lunch and make sure they wash their hands when they come home from school. Honestly, it helps. I was sick constantly when I first started teaching. My daughter has been wtih a cough fo the last 2 weeks though and Im starting to wonder about it...maybe its a new strain?

I thought I was the only one with that question. I feel like my son has been sick for 6 weeks and I am up tonight with the breathing machine from the coughing.

Just to throw this out to the group, as well. Undetected indoor air pollution can cause kids to have the sniffles for a very long time. Along the lines of the allergy's mentioned above.
If a kid keeps being sick, there may be something in the house that is actually causing it. Check for mold, dust mites, etc and try and keep fresh air flowing in and out when you can.

Are you sure it's colds? Have you had your child tested for allergies? I had my then-three yr old tested and even though she was negative for everything the allergist said it was ridiculous that she had not been tested after having a cough for six months. turned out she had pneumonia (mild case) and mild asthma. We had a nebulizer for a few months and she cleared up when summer came. Buy a simple stethoscope and listen to her lungs for wheezing.

My son just started kindergarten this year.  I feel like he brings home a new illnes every week!  I feel so bad for him, but even his doctor said it's to be expected. "Kindergarten is a bed of germs", she said.

I have three boys and between the ages of 1 to 7 they came down with lots of colds.  Often it felt like the colds where back to back.  My 8 year old is finally not constantly sick in the winter.  He is the only one, the other two have runny noses.  I do think they get a lot of the colds at school and than they bring them home to the youngest brother.  By 8 it should get better.  They have built up a better immune system and are able to fight off more colds. I know that it seems like it will never happen.

My girls are always bringing something home, especially this time of year but what I've found to be the best thing to keep them out of the dr's office is garlic.  I have a liquid form that's called Kyolic and you get it at a health store.  If it's a mild case I put 10 drops and mix it in with a teaspoon of juice or tea, anything just to help it go down.  For bad cold or respitory I give 20 drops in a teaspoon and give it to them twice a day.  You can't overdose on garlic and the worst thing that will happen is they will smell like garlic but it's kept mine out of the dr's office and very healthy.  You can also give them echinecha but if they take it too often they will build up an immunity so I just prefer to use garlic.

I went through this with my one son when he had to go to daycare and we only lasted 10 months before I quit my job and stayed home with him... we even wound up at the Infectious Disease Dept. for full testing to see why he was soooo sick so much compared to the other kids in his class. We found that he was in the norm and that his immune system needed a little break.... since it was one thing after the other. How old is your son? Is he being exposed to school for the first year? If so, expect it to continue like this for a little bit! Not every parent keeps their child home when they should, thus beginning an illness that sweeps through the class and hits some kids more than others.
