Any new ideas to get rid of lice? I have 2 preschoolers and a toddler that I am having a difficult time getting rid of lice. I use the special comb in their hair daily and have weekle given them lice treatments. (all brands). I have washed the bed linens so many times now I can't count and their stuffed animals. And of course vacuum the entire house. Any know ways to get rid of the nasty lice? Oh, and I am pregnant and not a big fan using the chemicals! Help.... an itchy mom

the cleaner you are, the more attracted they'll be. not saying you should just be filthy, but they love clean hair more than they do dirty hair, so constantly washing and cleaning is doing more harm than good

Not sure if anyone else has heard of this but I used dog shampoo in the past. My sister and I had headlice everytime someone said it, then our kids got for almost a year straight nothing seemed to work. Did the mayo, did the Rid and Nix, and other shampoos, then started using Hertz flea and tick shampoo because it has same ingredients for fraction of the price. The headlice comb works like a straight razor on my kids hair and mine, so its painful and worthless but a fine pet comb from pet dept is only 4 bucks and works like a charm, and you keep your hair.

Conditioner. Just lots of normal conditioner, after washing leave on for 10 mins, rinse well and go through with the lice comb. Doing that twice a week seems to keep my kids clear as it makes their hair smooth and more difficult for the lice to cling on to and lay eggs. Other thing is you need to find out where they are getting them from. It's not fair on you or your kids if they are getting them from another child who is not being treated.

I'm not sure if you found a fix it yet, but I wanted to share what worked with my girls. My girls have VERY curly hair and a very resistant strain of lice... I tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked and they screamed everytime I used the tiny comb (I cried with them). As I was about to give up and shave their heads I found an at home remedy online and gave it a try... it was a Godsend!

Basically you're using Cetaphil facial cleanser to smother the lice... it sounds kookie but I was at my wits end and willing to try anything and I swear it worked first try. I'm following this with the link explaining the process. A side note... I left the dried cleanser in for a full 24 hours not just 8 like the instructions said.

hiya been a mum of 5 weve had to deal with lice a lot of times ive found prevention is better than cure.i find using conditioner spray on my daughters hair everyday prevents as cannot climb into there hair also washing hair with either tea tree shampoo or coconut shampoo then comb with lice comb with conditioner on this should get rid of any lice but i also wash actal pillow and duvets because can live in bedding use a safety pin in each corner of pillow in machine so dont lose shape but also taught my kids to keep there heads away from kids who are always scratching and tie their hair back on pe days and swimming days.and buying hats for playing out in street like said prevention better than cure but normaly takes 3 weeks to break a cycle so comb in morning and night that way any that hatched in night you catch before lay any eggs and if you comb after school catch before get before laying eggs and job is lot easier with conditioner or conditioner spray i find avon 1.50 a bottle quite good and mine havent had nits since using which is a year.

I don't know if you do this in the states, but it is very common over here in Australia, majority of the schools do head checks, we have parent volunteers and this is how it is kept under control. Head lice love clean hair! Make sure the girls always wear their hair up also.

Tea Tree Oil- Its in the vitamin section. Mix a few drops with water and add to spray bottle. SPray sections that need it and let dry. Yes it has a eucalyptus odor but its better than smelling chemicals. Also use in hair. For some reason it kills the bugs and keeps them away. As far as the hair goes. At night coat hair with olive oil and put on shower cap. It suffocates the lice and the new ones that hatch can't make it up the hair shaft to the scalp and they die. Use the special comb before washing out. It's easier on the hair folical and your daughters scalp. Only took three days and my house and kids were completely clear.

i had this issue a couple years back and for a whole year i battled it with both of my kids. my son was only 2 and i was scared to use the shampoo on him and he fought and fought of course. so one day i was at walmart to get more shampoo and they were completely out. as i was looking at the shelves i saw this thing called the robi comb. it was like 20 bucks or something and i figured id give it try. omg i will never buy shampoo ever again. this little battery operated comb works like a little bug zapper and it doesnt hurt at all when touched to the head. you can hear when it kills one so you know its working and after a month of using it everyday we were completely lice free. 5 min a day is all u need and it colpletely eradicates them. no more shampoo and no more having to sanitize everything in site. totally worth the 20 bucks believe me.

ok. I finally found what works. I tried the over the counter medicated stuff.. nope.. doesn't work. I did the tea tree oil/ mayo thing.. didn't work. I finally found what works.
Lystorine, Vinagar, Coconut Suave Conditioner, and Denorex shampoo. Soak their head and hair in the mouthwash.. leave on under a shower cap for two hours. Rinse and soak again in vinagar. leave on for one hour. Rinse and staturate with the coconut conditioner. Use a good metal lice comb and nit comb throughly in sections. Rinse conditioner. This is the only thing that finally got rid of our lice problem. I have my girls now wash their hair every other day with the denorex shampoo and condition with the coconut conditioner. After 6 months of continuous battle with every other remedy under the sun, this finally worked. And we have been lice free for about a month now. Hope this helps.

Best advice for lice I ever got. Forget all lice products. I had tried them all to no avail.

Suffocate the lice and eggs with regular old hair gel! Scoop a potful of it out, and PILE it on their head. Wrap some saran wrap on them if you want to. Leave it on for an hour or so- presto! They're all dead! Suffocated! Works like a charm! First time, every time! Enjoy!

I shared this trick with a children's home, I thought the manager was going to kiss me! :)

While its really horrible and doesnt look so great on girls the best way to get rid of them if you are having massive issues is definatly head shaving you know they are totally gone then and it grows out very fast i did this for my son and since then we have kept his hair very short clippered as they seem to have a real problem at there school combing out every night with conditioner slows them down but i dont really think it gets totally rid of them and if you are using the treatments you have to do them 3 times 7 days a part which totally sucks as they are so stinky. i do think a small amount of tea tree oil mixed with water and sprayed on just before they leave for school works to make them less atractive to the lice though.

Unrefined virgin coconut oil and virgin olive oil contain fatty acids that break down the bodies (exoskeletons) of the lice and kill them, you can put a lot on the hair and cover with a plastic cap for an hour or so and then wash it out and you can use a little each day and leave it in. Coconut oil put directly on the scalp tends to be absorbed and doesn't leave the same greasy feel that olive oil does. But the olive oil should make it easier to comb out with the metal comb.

Pure essential oils like tea tree oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, and rosemary oil can be used to treat the problem as well (several drops added to shampoo/conditioner, etc.) but be careful and use them in moderation, the strong smells may be irritating if too much is used for very small children or you while you are pregnant.

I've never known of a person of color to experience head lice (not that it can't happen) and I really believe that has something to do with the use of products (shampoos, conditioners, etc.) that contain olive oil and coconut oil on our hair. Many of the products have these essential oils added to them as well. I've often told my friends with small kids to add a few drops of the oils to a bowl of water as a rinse after shampoo/conditioning as a preventive measure if there is an outbreak at the child's daycare or school.

Lastly, I've heard that a mixture of 1 part Neem Oil and 2 parts Olive Oil gets rid of them quickly and for good. It's an old folk remedy. But I wouldn't recommend using it while you are pregnant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neem_oil

I've never dealt with this myself, but my friends have told me that it has worked for them, especially in preventing it from coming back once they got rid of it. I hope it helps. If nothing else you will all smell delicious and have really soft hair and skin. ;-)

Join the club! I have used everything on the market and home remedies. With my 2 year old I bought a lice shampoo($14.95) from www.naturalginesis.com. It's all natural which is a HUGE plus to me. They also have a special designed comb($12.95) that you can buy. IT WORKS WONDERS for BOTH lice and nits. This stuff really works and it's great with little ones.
