My 5 year old has trouble recognizing his letters

My son is going into Senior Kindergarten and is still struggling with recognizing and saying the name of letters. He can tell you almost every sound each letter makes but if you ask him the name of the letter he can't tell you. It's maddening. I just am not understanding how that can happen? He can recite the alphabet song but if you physically point to the letter P for instance...he will make the popping sound but cannot for the life of himself say what the letter is. He is a smart child, speaks very well, loves to write is numbers and letters etc but we are really struggling with recognition...this goes for numbers as well.

Is anyone else going through this or have any tips? We have been working with him all summer and have the Leap Frog Letter Factory where I have seen a small improvement but not significant.

My daughter was having the same problem she will be 6 next month when she was in headdstart they did an evaluation cause she is very intelligent talking g to her you would think you were talking to an 8 years old but when it came to looking at letters she couldn't tell you what it was but could do all the letters beginning sounds and same with numbers they said it wasn't a concern but when she started kindergarten she was still having the same problem so her teacher had her go with other students each day and get 30 min extra help and she has mad great progress where the teacher doing the extra help was going to take her out but her teacher is keeping her in so that she can excell in it an she can read her site words they have learned an can now see the letters an sound the words out so if I was you I would talk to the teacher and see if they have any extra help he can get

Im having same problem with my Daughter shes in a "head start" kindergarten class for kids who aren't quite where they should be academically. They sent home notes yesterday saying which letters they've learned so far, she knows 8, but she happened to accidentally grab another students note along with hers, and that student knows 24 and it made her feel bad and broke my heart :( i try working with her constantly but she is SO stubborn its like she is to proud to be taught or something even when i try teaching in subtle ways.

My daughter wants to do things her own way. She will tell me the sound and act like she doesn't know the name of the letter. My husband doesn't think she can count because she refuses to do it for him. I hear her counting when she plays or I wouldn't know! If you believe that there is a problem then talk to your family doctor first. CAPD is rarely diagnosed until 7 or 8 yrs old unless it is severe. You know your son best so do what your gut says but dont panic =)

How is your son making out? I am having the same exact problem with my 5yr. old son. Nobody understands they thing he is being stubborn or not be taught properly. I know there is something wrong but don't know what. I am going to have him evaluated. I am starting to look into Central Auditory Processing Disorder.

I wouldn't worry to much about it at the moment. It's the beginning of school year. Just keep an eye on him throughout the year and see if he is improving. Also, if the teacher isn't worried at the moment I wouldn't be to concerned. None of my boys knew the alphabet cold when they went to Kindergarten and by the end of the school year they were writing and reading. Remember boys learn a little later then girls. Your son might really good in another area like math or something so it might take him a little longer for reading and writing. Just keep reading to him and such, but don't be pressuring him to much, he might get frustrated. Be positive and just wait to see how he does through out the school year.

He's young, he'll get it. Play the alphabet game all the time. When you are driving, "look at the stop sign, stop begins with s" "Pizza starts with p" etc. He will learn so much more that way than just sitting at the kitchen table trying to recite the alphabet. But remember, as I said before, he is young just give him some time.

Don't worry too much right now. This is what Kindergarten is for. If his teacher sees a problem, she will tell you, as well as tell you how to approach it. My daughter knows her letters but refuses to tell me or some others but will tell her teacher and my husband. She told my husband that if she shows me she knows them, I might stop spending time working with her on it.
