my son is 5 yrs and he has real bad temper tantrums that can last up to 1 hour. Just the littlest thing upsets him. What would be the best way to deal with this situation?

I am with Reem Ahmad about verifying it isn't something else bothering him; school, ear infection ... I have three very nice boys, but we always know when one is not feeling well because they act out.

That being said, our middle son is very sensitive and use to have some wicked temper tantrums. We wanted him to feel that he could express himself, but we would direct him in a room away from other people ... he always stopped in a short time.

Also, we noticed that he gets extra cranky if he is hungry; whereas, his brothers just ask when dinner will be ready.

MOST OF ALL ... do not teach him that the poor behavior gets him anywhere. Don't teach him that it is okay to mistreat you, or anyone else. I know it is sooo hard and frustrating as the mom watching this; being tired yourself, wantiing your child to have happiness ...

We want to help our children, but we aren't helping them, ourselves or anyone if we teach them they are going to get anywhere by behaving that way.

It is okay to express yourself, and your feelings are valid, but not to hurt or offend anyone else.

I would put him in a "safe" room away from everyone else. Somewhere where he can't hurt himself or anyone else. If this doesn't improve, you might consider a psych eval. I'm not trying to say that something is wrong, just to be sure that everything is okay. My son was the same way, tantrums way out of proportion to the issue. Eventually he was diagnosed as Bipolar. There can be lots of reasons for the tantrums, and if there is a psychological issue it is best to deal with it early on!

Hi , if this temper is somthing uper recently not from th born you most search see Doctor some times its Bio or somthing bother him in school or home if he hasnt attention ,cause this older they cant express themselves and her we are mums 4 helpping them & taught them how 2 express by word ....... after that if you found there is nothing wrong then be patient & dont answer his request what ever he wants as a slave . The best way to deal with temper tantrums is to avoid them in the first place, ignore the behaviour until it stops...

One of my child had this temper when he was 4 months old untill 4 yrs old then it gon with th years dont worry be patient and this site very helpfully 4 u

Hi Stacey,

Do these tantrums happen around the same time of the day or at different times.  Is it a frustration with himself or the situation...I would love to help...but...every situation is different!
