My son is out of control and i don't know what else to do??

He is now 6 years old and still acts like his little sister who is about to be 3 years old. I really don't know what else to do. I have tried everything from time outs, to taking away all priviledges, talking calmly to him, tried to give him responsability to make him feel like he's a big boy now, i never baby talk to him (nor have I ever), i treat him like he is older only because he is so smart. I haven't gotten him tested for ADD yet because the doctors here don't seem to believe me when I talk about how bad he really is. They always tell me that its a phase and it will pass but it hasn't. I am a stay at home mom and I spend endless hours with him entertaining him and playing with him but nothing ever seems to be enough. Please help with any advice. I refuse to put him on meds because of the stories i have heard and therapy is just too expensive. Its gotten to the point that his sister is now starting to act like him and starting to rebel like he does and I really cannot go through this again with my daughter...please help I am desperate at this point!! Any suggestions??

Thanks Michelle and Maria! You've given me so much NEW information that I am newly inspired! Like a breath of fresh air I will definetely check out both of your recommendations asap! I am also going back to another specialist for my son and find out if this specialist will test him properly for add or adhd! I am both nervous but excited as I am determined to help him any way that I can. He is not a bad child, he just has bad moments. I know I can turn it around...just sometimes your patience runs thin and you feel a little helpless. Thanks again ladies :)

A lot of the times the doctors don't like to diagnose when a child is that young. One of the best books I have ever read on parenting is called "Raising a Thinking Child". I had to actually read it twice. It is extremely informative and had lots of great ideas that actually work. Like getting your child to think for themselves (instead of just telling them what to do) and then redirecting them by giving choices. It also talks about integrating verbal games into your day to make them think and understand right from wrong. You can buy it on amazon for cheap. Just a brillian book!! You should be able to buy it here for $2.99 plus few dollars in shipping.

If you truly think he might have adhd then look into the feingold diet it helps you determine what foods might be causing his behavior as many times a simple food item could be causing the issue. My niece was just rotten for years we couldn't leave her alone or she would destroy something found out from the specialist that it was the apple juice she was drinking messing with her head and causing the problem we eliminated the apple juice and she was a totally different child. My son however has extreme adhd and he is on meds however he is one of the success stories he was put on meds at the age of 5 and had success right away the meds worked immediately slight increases as he got bigger, we did have to switch his med now that he is hitting puberty but again the new one is working so meds worked for us. The feingold diet worked for my niece she is in grade 12 now and a straight a student and it is all just figuring out which food is triggering the behaviors.
