My oldest got a razor as her graduation gift from 5th grade, Summer going into middle school. However, my youngest daughter, who is darker skinned, darker hair and a lil more of a monkey :) (like her Mama) will be allowed to shave sooner. For me, it is all about communicating and showing her how and when. Not to mention, she is so much more mature than my older daughter was at the same age (I think that happens when you have an older sister to emulate).
Whatever you decide will be correct...all kids are different.

I started when I was 9 years old. My dsughter is 8 and I have used Nair or Veet on her legs cause it grows in very dark. Plus she races 4 wheelers and having the long hairs on her legs causes her to get pimples. So I say it is up to you and what you think. I wont let her shave her legs for another couple of years by herself.

My oldest daughter is about to turn 12 and she's been shaving her legs since this Spring. Most of the other 6th graders where shaving their legs and she's kinda on the hairy side. She just went just shaved them on her own without telling me. We had discussed it along with alot of other personal hygene so she knew what she was doing when she felt she was ready. I was nervous that she would cut herself, but she hasn't so far. My 9 year old is just starting to hit puberty so it won't be long and I'll go through all this with her too!

I think it's different for every parent. As a child my mom made me wait until I was 13 or so. All my friends were shaving and I thought it wasn't fair but rules are rules. For my daughter I think when she asks I will let her start. Shes only 9 now and has no interest yet but I figure by 6th grade she'll be ready. She has really dark hair on her legs so if shes ready for the responsibility I will let her have it. I think it's still a personal choice for all parents and no matter decision you make it will be the best decision for you and your daughter.

I have a 8 yr old and it's a question that has gone through my head before. I have come to the conclusion.... that when she thinks she is ready she will come to me. If I think she is mature enough to handle it then I will teach her how. Kids can be cruel. Some kids have more hair than others. So if she is coming to you, then it's probably uncomfortable for her. I would sit her down and show her the proper way to do it. I know my mom didn't show me so I had my sisters show me. Wouldn't you rather be the one to do it?

most of the girls in my childs fifth grade class were shaving and her leg hair was dark and this schoolyear we just started middle school at ten so she practiced over the summer i agree with the kids can be cruel comment, a venus is very protective and she has only nicked her leg once (no shaving the thighs) just her shin and knee the hairs on the thigh are not as coarse for most of us

Thanks for posting this..I have a 10 year old who wants to shave her legs. I told her I will not give a set age, we will see but not at 10. I was 13. I told her to feel the stuble on my legs and then her smooth legs:) It also doesn't help that her 10 year old cousin shaves her legs (and she had blonde hair) I am not ready for this

I have a 7 year old girl and I was wondering the same thing (just to prepare myself and have a game plan for when she's older) I decided that when she comes home and most of her female classmates shave, then she will too. Things are different from when I was smaller, and I think I was 12 when I was allowed to. But even then there were a lot of girls my age that had already been shaving for awhile. I just don't want my daughter to feel self conscious or be made fun of by those "mean girls" ya know? So when she tells me she's ready, then I will be too.

My daughter is 10 years old. She wants to shave bc her 11 year old cousin shaves, but we are not letting her yet. Her leg hair is long and light brown so I may let her shave in a year or so if she brings it up again then. I think waiting until high school is way to old.

I just started my daughter this year. She is 11 and has done it 2x's already....it also depends on how developing your daughter is...I watch her when she does it so I know it's done right...you may also want to try her on Nair or some form of hair removal first...I didn't but I did think about it because I was scared that she was going to cut up her legs with the shavers...so far she has done well
i remember being in 8th grade (eons ago!) and my friends and I would tease this girl that wasn't allowed too...just remember kids can be cruel, and teasing hurts. I believe 12-13 is the perfect age, and it will make her feel "older", and "mature", which can be good for self esteem. But always safety first and supervise!
