Spelling words

Hi my name is Alisha and I have a 6 year old who is in first grade. Each week he has 15-20 spelling words, like people, friends, night and we study all the time and he does really well however I need some tricks on how to make it fun for him. He gets frustrated from the studying but the grading scale is so high, 94-100 is an A, if he misses just three thats a C. How can I make it fun for him???

My son does "rainbow writing" you get 5 different color crayons or markers and write over the word 5 times. Also he can draw a picture and write teh words arond the picture. (My son drew a dinosaur and wrote his words all around the dinosaur.

Joyce thank you soooo much for the website, its soo great and my son loves playing games on the computer, I think he is really going to like it. I never thought of hangman. Thank you so much.

I have a whole sheet of things we can do (some listed below), but one of my son's favorites is to play hangman. All he knows is that it will be a spelling word. I usually reserve this for Monday or Tuesday night. By thursday, he needs to know the words well.



We also clap with each word and sing songy say them some weeks.



There is also a website (http://www.spellingcity.com/) where you can enter the words and then you play games with the words.

my oldest is in 1st grade as well--we have done some simple things like spelling the words w/different objects {ie: spelling w/holloween candy, pasta.etc}, I have had him use each spelling word in a sentence he makes up {some are quite funny} then he spells it, we have circled the spelling words in magazine or newspaper articles



I am sure we have done some other stuff as well, but my mind is drawing a blank hope some of these ideas help

Alisha, something that I have tried with my son is to put flash cards around the house and ask him to tell me the word before he uses the object that it is on. For example, I may put a word on the door to the bathroom or on the refrigerator. It has become a game and I have found that when he is more comfortable pronouncing the word the easier it is for him to spell. We have done this with spelling words as well as when I have been teaching him spanish.



Something else that we have tried is making our own short story each week with the words. Michael loves to draw so we take one of his pictures and using the weeks spelling words we write a few sentences to express what the picture is about. It is a lot of fun and sometimes reminds me of the old Mad Libs kids would do growing up. Last year, when he was in third grade we had one character that he made doing different things and we kept the story going throughout most of the year. It was fun looking back at the story we created together and made learning spelling words more interesting.
