For those of you with younger school aged kids, the principal of our elementary school shared this website. It allows you to search for books at your child's guided reading level. The teachers in our school include this information on the report card. A child should be able to read books at their level independently and books at a higher level are used for teaching. Here is the site...

Change the last letter to your child's level.

My daughter LOVES the Junie B. Jones books. They are funny and fairly challenging. I also recommend:
Because of Winn Dixie
The Eragon Trilogy

Also, our local library does a summer reading program. They have competitions where the kids can win things, authors come for the kids to meet, all kinds of neat stuff. It's definitely worth checking into.

My 8-yr-old reads The Magic Tree House books, and especially likes the accompanying Research Guides. Her older sister read all of the Harry Potter books!

I have two boys 8&11. We went to the library this weekend so they could renew their cards and pick chapter books for summer reading. I also have them write summary's to help with comprehension, spelling, grammar and paragraph/sentence structure.
The youngest finished all the Diary of Wimpy Kid series (he started mid-year), and is now starting The Percy Jackson Series. My oldest is a HUGE reader, and checked out the last of novel of the series Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan (his favorite author). The first book is called, The Lost Hero if you are interested...happy summer!
