My son didn't eat any real food for nearly 3 days. I pushed the liquids as much as I could and Ensure (liquid food). My fear was dehydration but we did the pinch test on the back of his hand a few times during the days and he was okay. Good luck, the worst is behind you.

Thank you to all he had the surgery and was released after about 3 hrs he has been extremely groggy, throwing up x7 yesterday, sleepy, refusing to eat Anything, he is drinking sprite, pedisure, and ice chips a little, today there is really no change he is still lethargic groggy and im hoping he is wakening up in the next little bit he wakes up like every 2 hrs for like 5 mins then he conks out again, they gave him some medicine to take every 4 hrs as needed for pain and i stopped that this morning at 6 am and switched to tylenol hoping that he would wake up but he is still sleepy---- dr says it ususally takes 24 hrs to recover from the sleepiness and it has been 29 hrs since surgery so maybe he will be awakening up soon-- in the mean time im just pushing liquids

Yes sweetheart, my daughter Ki'mya just had the same surgery in February of this year (2009). She was groggy, crying, and very disoriented right after the surgery. They kept her in recovery for a few hours until she was calm and more responsive. She was released given pain meds and told to eat soft foods and clear liquids as tolerated. Needless to say she was back to her old self in about 2 days. I kid you not! This 3yr old child of mine was eating fried chicken in 2days. My husband, mom and I took turns the 1st day tending to her and feeding her popsicles, jello, pudding, plenty of water(ice cold) and pedialyte. She had the surgery on Feb.9, 2009 and was totally back to normal to enjoy her birthday party by Feb. 23,2009. Don't worry it is not as bad as you may think. Make sure you know the surgeon well or have someone refer one to you. If possible take your son to a children's hospitial for the surgery. The children's hospital I took Ki'mya to made me feel reassured because I knew they specialized in the care of children. I took her to the same surgeon who had preformed the same surgery on me last year in Nov. It took me 3 months to regain the taste in my mouth. The surgeon said it is much worst for females than males and older people than children. Good Luck, I'm sure that your son will be just fine.

My daughter had hers taken out over the summer. As long as you make sure that he stays hygrated it shouldn't be that difficult for him. Just reassure him that you are there for him whenever he needs you and all should be fine.

Hi, My son didn't have his removed until he was 10. I am worry I didn't push to have it done sooner as he is much better for it. He recovered very well and was quite happy to go back to school after 2 weeks rest at home. Teachers commented on how much his behaviour had improved after only 2 weeks after going back to school. Hope this helps.

My son went through the adnoidectomy/tonsilectomy...make sure you give him some cool things to soothe his throat post-op. Stay on top of the pain medications... I fell behind and needed to take my son in for IV pain management, so that he would drink fluids.... drink plenty of fluids and rest. The smell will go away as his throat heals up... stay at home with him... he is going to need some TLC & rest. (My son's ear infections, & snoring both GREATLY improved!) Good luck to both of you : )

My daughter got her tonsils and adnoids out 3 years ago at the age of 4. She had problems sleeping at night. Snoring and constantly waking up at night. She also got strep alot. Like others say, it only took 30-45 mins before the doctor came out and showed us her tonsils. The doctor informed us that as soon as she woke up they would roll her out to us in her recovery room. She recovered quickly and was back at school the next week. I had my tonsils out last year. Also one week for recovery. Good luck and make sure you keep your child hydrated!

my son had his both removed when he was 3...i had to went until he turned 3 because they recover better his doctor said! that summer before he turned 3 he has scarlet fever 3 times so I couldn't wait until them came out! the surgery took about 45 minutes and went really well...he was in alot of pain when he woke up but the pain medicine helped. the pain medicine made him sick (throwing up) so we had to stop them.. I had him eat soft food for 2 weeks just to make sure because his father had the same surgery and he had major problems and I just wanted to make sure it was going to heal right. I would just give him soft foods even if he feels good...thats what my doctor told me! don't worry when its over they will heal and will be much better...we will pray for u! hope this helps!!

My son had both done when he was about 2 1/2. The surgery itself only lasted about 45 minutes. They never told us that they wait for the kids to wake up the second time before they come get us. By 2 - 2 1/2 hours we were frantic! For you to get yourself ready the worst part was seeing the little guy on a huge bed with the tube sticking out his arm. It should be a little easier to get your son ready than for a younger one. I was told it might hurt an older kid more but at least he can understand it better and communicate to you better. They also never told me until after the surgery that he can only eat soft foods (I forget if white bread even qualified) for at least a few days.
My son got his out because they were HUGE - the tonsils nearly touched without a cold and we were told that he probably never breathed out his nose before. He choked on food since he was a baby and we'd stay awake with any cold to be sure he kept breathing. ALL of this went away as soon as he had the surgery. It was obviously well worth the pain. His voice changed too. Good luck.

My son had it done when he was 5. The next day he was eating chips and salsa I was worried it was going to hurt him or burn but he was fine. It didn't take him long at all to recover from it. He is 10 now and hasn't had a problem snoring or not being able to breath since. It will be ok mom...

I had my son's taken out when he was 3. It was October 9th and he was released on the 11th. My son had Sleep Apnea and Asthma < Im drawing a blank sorry if Mispelled. It is very stressful to think about it. I worried until after his surgery and I know and trust the Doctor that did it because she's done like 7 or 8 surgeries on me Before she knew my son. Even having the upmost Respect and Trust for the doctor it is still scary.
My son was eating Strawberries by the morning after surgery. At that point they are to eat soft, seedless foods. Also it wasn't even 30 minutes for his surgery. Once we were on the childrens floor I was done for. He was up and moving. I had made 10 lasps in 30 minutes and then the playroom opened up and he was in there til it closed that night.
It will be ok. It's hard to see them during Recovery under anstesia but it's calming to know that having this done helps them. If you have any other questions just write me. Take care and good luck

2 of my daughters have been there and the 10 yr old had it done twicw , the recovery is not as bad as it sounds, yes they are very sore for a day or two after surgery but lots of fluids and cold stuff keep up with the meds he is given, since he is 5 he will have an easier time of telling you when he hurts, mine were both 2 1/2 or less when they had it done the first time so it was a lot harder to know how bad it hurt except for all the crying... may be a little stressful but you will be glad you did it in the end since he will sleep better and wake up more rested and the common cold and allergiey season will be easier on him.. hope this helped
