Cartoons and movies that are supposed to be for children teach all kinds of negative behaviors to children,,,behaviors that us parents would NOT accept. I've also heard of hidden messages in cartoons and movies. Things they learn from television can have a lasting effect on their behavior, way of thinking, attitude...they pick up bad habits and so on....so I'd just like to share what I do with my son....I told him that there are many other things that he can do instead of watching television...like colouring...painting...drawing...arts and craft...playing....and when he wants to watch tv I review this with him. I also do this with my niece and nephew. And most importantly I NEVER tell him to go and watch TV.
Just something I wanted to share to those who are interested.
PEACE :)

Summer Vacation can be a harder time to limit TV for some kids. But in our house I allow my two older kids to watch one movie each night. ( pg rating, mostly disney) I don't set a time because most movies are over the one hour limit I would like to set.

Thanks for the comments everyone...i''m glad I shared this because it's great to know that other parents are taking this seriously. You're welcome Amanda J. Thanks for the extra tips Kelly H. @ Angie yeah...mainstream music is a whole other mess by itself---we have so much work to do.

I agree, but I'm not as much concerned about what my son learns when watching TV (because I carefully screen it) as the effect it has on brain development and the way they process information. I limit TV to about 30-60 minutes 4 days a week. He watches PBS kids and can earn a movie (cuddled up with me) by helping me out around the house, finishing a book, or some other little achievement.

We do NOT leave the TV on for "background noise" as that is one of the worst things you can do for your child. If the child is not actually sitting in front of the TV watching it, it needs to be OFF. If you or your child needs background music, turn on the stereo or plug in the ipod.

i agree completely, Our kids have the televisions in thier room, and we have video games but we limit what they get, we get them to go outside, of play a game with them. or color. They get a half an hour a day before bedtime to relax and watch a movie, of course it has to come from our movie cabinet and be approved by us. There is no need for a kid to sit in front of a tv all day they are not for babysitting. You are your childrens first teacher and interaction is a must for teaching. thanks for the comment...

I agree. I'm not real crazy about any of the "popular" culture. My children watch too much tv but that's mostly because they are home alone for a few hours each day. We don't listen to much mainstream music and we only watch movies that have an appropriate story to teach.
