I have a 11 yr old son and wondering if that's a good age to start teaching him how to do laundry? When did others start teaching their kids?

I chose to do the laundry for the household but my 13 has known how since she was about 7. It's just more cost efficient for me to handle it. My son is 10 and I've not pushed him to learn. He knows how to do each step but I never assign him more than 1 at any given time.

My kids ages 4, 6, and 8 all help with laundry. My 8 yr old can do it herself but I supervise to make sure it's done right.

J is 6 yrs old, he folds and puts his laundry away, but I wash and dry it for him. His clothes are small, it takes too long for him to get a full load, so I just toss his in with ours to finish out the load.
I will teach him how to do the actual washing, but right now he's too small to reach the knobs :)

My kids know how, however, my kids are NOT allowed to do laundry. I do all the laundry in the house and everyone else can stay away from it.

They always mix colors, leave a pen in it, don't get stains out and my kids aren't allowed to wear clothing with stains etc etc etc. I have a million stories. I do not have money to continually replace clothing theirs or mine. So honestly they can all ruin their own clothes when they move out until then I will do ALL laundry.

I started when they started to walk also with sorting, folding and loading at that time, then about 5 or 6 adding detergent and transferring the laundry and adding the dryer sheets . At about 7 or 8 they could do it by them selves with a little help by 10 they did it all on their own.

since mine was able to walk. he's always helped sorting colors out, always helped putting in the washer/dryer, always helped pour the detergent. now, at age 6, he almost does it on his own. the only thing i do is set the washing machine, and put the detergent in the cup for him to pour. he loves helping and gets mad if i already have laundry done when he gets home from school! LoL

My kids wanted allowence so we have a list of chores for them to do and my 8 year does laundry. I over see it but we sort and measure the soap out and she starts it. We have a step stool in the laundry room. She also put it in the dryer and starts again. I do over see what she has done but is doing a great job. My 7 and 8 yr old and me then fold the laundry together. My husuband and I feel that if they want allowences they need to work for it.

As soon as possible I find it helps them to become more independent....If he can remember to sort them by colors and understands not to wash the dry clean only ect... them please teach him...u may still need to monitor the use of bleach and show him how to measure the soap/fabric softner but this i a goood time to start....and it will make him feel like he is helping you by doing his part...Good luck!

When my son was 10 he was in charge of washing his own clothes. We had a front loading machine at the time. He was small for his age so when we moved to a place that had top loading washers I had to load and unload for him for a year. Now he is 14 and fully takes care of his laundry. He gets his own laundry card that I load with money each month.

My daughter who is 8, very tall for her age, does our laundry. She loves to show up her brother that she is younger and can do 2 peoples laundry! With her she just decided one day, at age 7, to do laundry and did it right, so I have not had her stop.

My son is 2.5 years old and he already helps with laundry. He loves to throw the clothes into the washer and, depending on his mood, sometimes he'll help me throw wet clothes into the dryer. I would say he'll probably be fully capable of doing a complete load of laundry (washing, drying, folding AND putting away) by the times he's about 10.

I will NOT let my kids move out of the house without knowing how to do laundry (I didn't and I was 19 when I left..my bf had to teach me XD)

I don't know when they started, but my girls will be 10 in December and have been able to do the laundry alone for about a year now.

My daughter started using the machine at age 9. But before then she was sorting her laundry to be washed. She was also helping to fold the laundry and put her own away. When she turned 9 I taught her how to use the machine! She loved it! She's a pro at doing laundry now at 15!
