what is a good bed time for a elementary school aged child?

My 7yr old and 9yr old both go to bed by 8:30PM. The 9yr old gets to read til 9PM though. It all really does depend on the child and level of activity. On days they have sports, they each go to bed half-hour earlier.
I recently visited with my daughter's 4th grade class and asked the same question. Most of them are in bed by 9PM.

My son is 5 and goes to kindergarten. He gets up at 7:15 and goes to bed at 8 or 8:30(depends on if he gets on green at school)(if he goes to bed at 8:30 he watches tv for 30 min's if we arent playing game or something, we try to change it up like he can read books). My son needs quiet time before bed. I feel panick if its after 9 and he still is not in bed (for school anyways...lol)

It normally take a child a while to wind down and get sleepy, so I normally put my kids (and all of my friends with kids) at 8:15 and they have quiet time reading, listening to the radio, etc until about 8:45 in there bed only. Then lights out that way they are asleep by 9. If your child is hard to get up in the morning or the bus runs early then try 8:00 till 8:30 quite time, some days my kids need the exta sleep and the in the bed quite time really works well on winding them down

My 7-year old gets ready for bed at 8pm if he's not already sleeping by that time. He wakes up between 6-6:30am to start his day. The latest he falls asleep is about 9pm and is still awake by 6:30am. The only time he wakes up later is when he's sick. I usually don't need to wake him in the morning - he gets up on his own.

My 3rd grader goes to bed at 9. He has a younger brother and sister they go to bed at 8. So it gives him some time to be alone with Mom and Dad. We get to talk or just spend time together and get to enjoy him being 9. Some of his discussions are amazing to us.

My son just turned 7 and he is second grade. I put him to bed by 7:30 because he has to get up at 7:15 to go to a before school program so that I can go to work. But when I didn't have to go to work this early and I could take him to school, which starts at 9:00, I would put him to bed by 8:00. I base his bedtime by what time he gets up and what we have going on the next day...school it's 7:30 - 8:00 at the latest. Best of luck!!

Well when my son started kinder I put him in bed at 7:30 to make sure he got plenty of sleep. Now that he is in 2nd grade I let him stay up between 8 to 8:30 depending on how tired he is and what kind of dayhe has had at school. I thinks part of it depends on the child. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

My daughter is a 3rd grader also. She goes to bed at 9:00 but usually is asleep about 9:30. She has to be up by 7:15 so almost gets 10 hours of sleep. Kids this age need 10 hours of sleep-or so I've read. Even when she was homeschooled she went to bed at 9:00 ish. Sometimes she writes or reads in bed to help her unwind and then lights out by 9:30 at the latest and she goes right to sleep.

Hi Marcia, bedtimes should be set according to the time that the child wakes up in the morning. Small children need about ten hours of sleep. Also, the bedtime should allow for you to have some wind down time alone or with your husband before you go to sleep. As an adult you need a full 8 hours. My children are sent to bed at 8 and I go to bed at ten and we get up at 6 well rested. Hope this helps.

Well my 10 year old has been going to bed at 9pm for the past 4 years. Prior to that he was in bed by 8. He wakes up at 7am and it seems to be plenty of sleep for him. Every child is different. Some need more sleep then others.
