My son just lost his first tooth. My husband and I have been trying to figure out how much money tto leave under his pillow. My arguement was that it is his first, so we could give hime more, but my husband thinks he will be expecting it all the time. What is the going rate for the tooth fairy?

some people here are saying $5 but when you have 4 children and a limited income that is not possible. I say that is mind blowing and just spoiling your child. It's a tooth that came out on it's own your child didn't bring home all A's on their report card.

My husband and I give $3-5 per tooth, but we also have a catch to this which was explained to the kids that if the tooth had a cavity the tooth fairy does not accept the tooth and will not leave any money and they more than likely may owe the tooth fairy $1 for that tooth....... Keeps them brushing thier teeth.........

Our tooth fairy gives crisp 2 dollar bills for each tooth and usually can get them from the bank.

I hate to say this cause it has gone up .75 cents since I was 4 or 5 and that was only 20 years ago but it's now a $1. i know it sounds crazy but that's what it is!!

In our neck of the woods, the Tooth Fairy has become more generous! My son told me some of his classmates had received $5 per tooth from the Tooth Fairy. So of course, when my son lost his first tooth, he also received $5 and he was so happy that he got the same amount of money his friends did.

She's 8 and I was thinking what would she buy with $1. Well, I guess now i started something bad cause the next tooth she will expect the same huh? I recommend starting out as small as possible!!

Our tooth fairy leaves a $2 bill.... It's something most kids don't see often, so it makes it super exciting to get:)

I personally go with $1.00 a tooth if it falls out at home/school etc. I do inflate it to $2.50 if he had to have a tooth pulled at the dentist.

my kids r very light sleepers so we have them leave there teeth in a coffee cup on the tv or mantle somewhere in the house where the tooth fairy can get to it one nite i had no money no change no nothing and it was close to christmas so i put a stocking stuffer in it now they expect that instead of money so i pick out lil things from the dollar store but theres a rule if the tooth isnt out by 8pm the tooth fairy wont come cause she wont know about the tooth cause shes already making her rounds lol

I agree one dollar is a good amount...you could give it in change; we would do that with our daughter when she first started losing because she felt like she got more.

I have to say that I happy that my daughters tooth fairy must have been right on the mark!! She got $1.00 for her first tooth, and will prob get the same from here on out. I can't justify giving my child even $5.00 per tooth. Just seems silly to me. And those that give even more per tooth are CRAZY!!!!

When my son lost his first tooth it was at school but we gave him $1. When he lost his second tooth he was spending the weekend with his father and he gave him $1 for that tooth also.

I left my daughter a dime! She was overjoyed. My husband said I was cheap and should have left her a dollar or two (he who is always complaining about money!). So when the next tooth came out, he gave her all the loose change he could find (over a dollar I think). So now he is the "tooth fairy" and has to get cash when needed. I do like the idea of leaving a 50 cent piece or silver dollar.

We go by how old she is. My daughter got $6 for her first and second lost teeth, and now I assume we will move up to 7. But my little sister informed me the tooth fairy pays you a dollar for every year you had the tooth and she didnt. "Like rent money" So since she had told my daughter that, thats how we did it.

My 5 yr old just lost his first one this past month. We gave him a gold coin dollar. It's still just a dollar, but it was so COOL and special that only the toothfairy would have those. :) Luckily I had one stashed away, now I need to go to the bank or the mint for a new one since he's got another loose tooth.

My 7-year old has only lost two teeth so far. Each time he got $2 from the tooth fairy. But I do agree that the tooth fairy should give what can be afforded.

My daughter lost a tooth from a fall when she was 3 and I gave her a chocolate dollar. She was happy with just that. My son (6) just recently lost his first tooth and he got a dollar & a chocolate dollar.

In our home the Going rate is a gold coin. I agree with your husband. You will be starting an expectation and the first tooth fairy payment will be the expected going rate. I do $2 for an exceptional piece of enamel and $1 for something nice. I also drop the tooth into a clear glass of water to await the pic up. When the children are asleep I replace the water with fresh water and add a little glitter and food colouring before dropping in the money with a drop of disinfectant (goodness knows where the tooth fairy has had that coin!) LOL Good luck.

this is a great question my son is 6 and has not lost any teeth yet. He did tell me a while back that when it happens the tooth fairy will leave a shiny penny I laughed and said yup. I used to get 50 cent pieces, and I would like to continue that tradition, maybe a dollar piece for the first tooth if it ever falls out lol.

I have a 7 year old and I wondered the same thing. I do $3.00 a tooth. Your husband is right you give them more on the first tooth they will expect it all the time.

We give $2.00 ever tooth and it goes into a little tooth holder so the tooth doesn't get lost then we replace the tooth with money.

your husband is right if you give high all the time it will always be expected and that is not a good habit to form

We do £1 for the first tooth & 50p for each tooth after that - we also do a letter from the tooth fairy (typed up & signed by a friend 'love from the tooth fairy') when the first tooth is lost explaining that the first tooth is worth more because it's a big deal to lose your first tooth. But that if I (the tooth fairy) had to give every child in the world £1 for each tooth then I (the tooth fairy!!) would run out of money very quickly. My son has just lost his 2nd tooth & he was just as excited to find 50p as he was to find his letter and £1 for his first tooth. It's up to you to know what you can/ are willing to afford, bearing in mind how many teeth they have to lose!!

Erika, my son just lost his first tooth a few weeks ago and then his second just the other night. My son's father gave him three dollars for the first tooth so I felt like I had to keep it at 3 dollars with the second.

When my son lost his 1st tooth, I (the tooth fairy) mistakenly put $5 under his pillow! So I quickly explained that the first tooth was special and that there will probably only be $1 for the other teeth that fall out. When my daughter lost her 1st tooth, my son told her the story about the 1st tooth, so we were obligated to leave $5- all other teeth are $1. Moral of the story, don't try to leave money for your child while in the dark. I'm just glad it wasn't $20

Usually a dollar, sometimes whatever change we have around. I, too, agree with your husband that you should be consistent with the amount. Kids are really good at remembering stuff like that! My nephew just lost a tooth, and when his parents forgot to put money under his pillow (they didn't have any cash!) they told him the tooth fairy was on vacation. He wanted to know "Can the European Tooth Fairy stop by then, she's in a different time zone and won't need to be back til tomorrow afternoon!"

I give my daughter $1.00 per tooth. Its not like they loose their teeth on a daily basis. But I also taught her the value of a dollar so she has been saving her money she claims for a car when she goes to High School lol.

Truthfully, economy plays a roll in how much the tooth fairy leaves.

With the first tooth my daughter lost she received a dollar. Each tooth after that was a little less down to a quarter. She is now 9 and knows who the tooth fairy is. When her brother recently lost a tooth she came to me and said she had a dollar and was playing tooth fairy that night, but I would have to cover the next couple of teeth because she was only going to be the tooth fairy one time. I suspect when her younger sister looses her first tooth my daughter the tooth fairy will make another visit.

To answer your question, "What is the going rate for the Tooth Fairy?? " I would say what ever you can afford at the time.

My 1st child received $5 for the 1st tooth. (That was all I had in my wallet - yikes.) So we did the same with the 2nd child. For all remaining teeth they both get a Gold Dollar Coin, which is something special and signifigant and something they will keep instead of just spending on junk.

I've always done $5 a tooth. I think I was so excited when my first child lost a tooth that I started out with $5 and after that I figured it was ok to continue this amount since my kids are really good at taking care of their teeth. I decided what the heck they deserve it:) $1 does seem very reasonable though. Talking to my friends, most of them do a $1.

Our tooth fairy gives a dollar, plus a brief letter. Grandma, however, informed my darling that front teeth are worth double, so each of those went for two bucks. A lost tooth that gets lost outside under a tree can still be redeemed at our house if he writes the tooth fairy a letter of explanation. (These are darling, and I've kept them with the teeth that didn't get lost twice.)

The gold dollar coins seem to be extra special! My daughter loves getting them when she loses a tooth. My oldest son lost all his teeth and he got about $3-4 for his baby teeth. My youngest hasn't lost any yet...so time will tell with him.

I have heard crazy amounts from classmates and neighbors (one classmate got $100)...I think $1 should be good...and it should remain consistent. If you want to do something special for the first...$1, a new tooth brush and some "fairy dust" near where he hid the tooth.

It started out being a dollar and change with my 1st daughter (18)

With my 2nd daughter, raised to 2 dollars and maybe some change (12)

I believe we are now up to 3.00 with my son (6) and of course, change.

Gotta have snack machine money... lol
