What's a good age to start potty training a boy?

My son is 18 months old and doesn't like having his diaper changed, nor does he really like being wet or poopy. Does this show a possibility of training early? I was slow on the training with my daughter.. she didn't fully potty train until she was about 4.

Thank you all so much. I think I will get him a seat just to get him used to it. I am prepared to be patient, since this is my first boy and they are very different from girls in training.

I think those are signs that hes ready to try, keep in mind that doesnt mean it will be smooth sailing, expect the accidents and make sure to assure him its ok, so he wont feel bad and give up. My daughter showed signs and then seem to change her mind, so I had to waite til she was ready, its better that way.

At least start getting him use to sitting on the potty, if he likes it great, but the chances of him feeling the sensation to go on his own at this age is still small his bladder is probably not fully developed yet. My son didn't like dippers about the same age but also didn't like sitting on the potty either. It was when he found out grown up boys had to sit to go #2 and they can stand to go #1 he felt like a big boy and became proud of himself.

I would say yes that those are signs of being ready to potty train. However, they say that boy bladders aren't fully developed until age 2 so it may be hard for them to control it at times. I kept trying off and on with my son when he was 18 - 24 months but didn't really get serious with him until after 2 yrs. Every child is different so it is really hard to say when. It's mainly when you think your being given the signs that you could start trying. I didn't have a hard time geting him potty trained but when it came to poopy training he drove me nuts. He was probably fully potty trained by 3 - no accidents anymore but poopy training took until 3 1/2 + or so. He didn't care about it in his pants I guess. I would just say it's ok to try it now and stay ontop of it and if he really doesn't seem interested I wouldn't worry or be concerned. I would then just start at 2 yrs. It can't hurt anything to try now if you want.

I think your son definately sounds like he is ready to start potty training. I started to train my 2 eldest boys when they were 15 & 18 months and they were both completely dry by 2yrs (even at night). my youngest son was havin none of it so I had to take a step back and resumed his potty training when he was nearly 2 but thankfully now he is totaly dry also. Good luck and happy training :-) nicky x

I think when they are old enough to walk and sit by themselfs

thats when you should have a potty in the bathroom for him and take him everytime you or your husband go and just sit in there with him he'll get the hang of by watching you.

My oldest son was the hardest to potty train, he also was almost 4. But I think they can definitley start at 18 mos. At least get him used to sitting on the potty. But at this age, I wouldn't make it a huge deal. I would go at his pace and if he doesn't want to, I wouldn't force it. He definitley sounds like he is ready to try. My son did not care if he pooped his pants. He would keep playing until I smelled it! LOL
