Why does my 5 year old keep lying to me?

For the last 3 or 4 weeks my 5 year old daughter has started lying to me about things. Ive always been able to trust her and this has never been an issue before. When she wants to go to play with her friend next door i've always been able to trust that she asks me first. Or if she does something wrong she has never had much of a problem just fessing up to it. But now that i've been catching her up in her little lies I have to second guess everything that she tells me and it feels awful! Me and her dad have had a couple of sit downs with her telling her why its not ok to lie but its still going on. What can we do to make her understand?

My son is 6 and he usually tries to lie when he thinks he's in trouble for something. I give him one opportunity to change his story and tell me the truth, I gently remind him before he does that if I don't here the truth the punishment for the lie is going to be way worse than if he had just told me the truth. If he doesn't tell me the truth he gets a very severe punishment, if he tells me the truth I thank him, remind him why it's so important to tell the truth and then move on.
