My 23 year old has just told me he is considering transitioning. This does not bother me, but what is upsetting is how he feels he is "abnormal" for wanting to do this. I am at a loss on how to help him feel good about himself and who he is.

Hi Deb...I know how you feel..My Daughter Ashley now lives her life as a Man...But before she did this her life was a mess. Not knowing which world she belonged in,After a lot of help from the Gay community he is great...Lee is here with me,,I will let him help you!!(Proud Mom of a Gay Child/Adult)

Hey. Lee here. My entire life has consisted of me feeling abnormal. Growing up, i got kicked out of boys bathrooms because i honestly thought i was a real boy. Everyone knew that i was different except me. It sucks. It took me many years to realize who and what i was. I thought that i was the freak that my dad thought trans people were. I hated myself and tried taking my own life, unsuccessfully (fortunately). Your son is not abnormal. Honestly the best advice i can give you is to encourage him to meet other trans people. We are out there. I learned to accept myself by knowing that i am not alone, that i am not a freak, and that we are no different then anyone else. The hardest part is self acceptance. Time, support, love, and education are all you need. I met some amazing people, i went to conferences, joined online groups, and got involved in trans events. Feel free to have him talk to me. My facebook is Lee Werner (a phoenix tattoo is my picture.
