Hello! I have a 2 year old daughter and I'm due with our first little boy in early October! I am interested in hearing how people run their day with a toddler and newborn. My daughter has never been on any kind of schedule or even routine, really, but I'm afraid life will be hard to manage if we don't adopt a routine. So please, share your day with me. :) thanks!

The best thing to do (in my opinion, and from my experience) is to start as early as possible with getting your little one on a set routine.

Here's what I did:

Establish a wake-up time. Do the same thing every morning.
Make sure she's able to wake up, have some time with mommy, eat breakfast, watch a show (whatever you do in the mornings to get her going).

[Allister (my little boy), wakes up at 7:30 a.m. He goes potty, and watches a show on PBS while I make breakfast. We eat, sing silly songs, and then it is off to brush our teeth and get dressed for the day.]

Establish a set time (a "rough" set time, of course.. life happens and we aren't always doing the same thing every single day) for meals and nap-time.

[Since Allister wakes up at 7:30, we have breakfast at 8. He has a little snack at 9:30 or 10. We are eating lunch by 12:30, and nap-time starts at 1. He wakes up at 2:30. He has a snack at 2:45. Then we do whatever else we have planned for the day (ie: the park, shopping..etc). We have dinner by 6:15 or 6:30. Bed time is at 8:00.]

Every child is different. I understand that not every kid sleeps for 12 hours. But, after a week of being consistent with my set schedule, my little boy was putting himself to bed at 8 every single night. Kids are hungry for a routine. It makes their lives a lot smoother.
