Holy crap, gas prices are high! They're soaring daily and set to spiral further and further out of control. Thursday night, gas prices spiked 6 cents alone, and CNN proclaims it the "Most Expensive February Ever." Thanks, Gadhafi.

The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.287 per gallon -- the highest it has been since October 2008. Hawaii is hardest hit with gallons going for $3.757! And it's not going to get any better; some experts predict prices could increase by as much as 85 cents more per gallon this summer. Forget the road trips, I guess.

It's shocking to go fill up my small sedan and spend $60. The same car cost me about $40 a couple of years ago. That's a big difference! So the hunt for cheap gas -- or at least cheaper gas -- is on. Of course, that hunt shouldn't involve driving around aimlessly in search of a deal. Here are a few ways you can plan ahead to save some bucks at the pump:

Take Cash

It's a pain to get out of your car in the cold, or heat, or with children strapped into car seats, to walk in and pay, I know. But many stations offer a discount for paying with actual dollars, so it can be worth the hassle.

Warehouse Stores

Costco always offers gas a few cents cheaper than I can find anywhere else. You have to be a member, and you have to be willing to endure what are usually long lines, but you will typically save.

Web Searches

It's a lot cheaper to comparison shop online for gas than it is to burn it up driving around in your car looking for a deal. Sites like GasBuddy.com provide updates as to what the going prices are at various locations across the country. Now if only Groupon would get it in on the action -- this is where we really need one of their deals!

Time It Right

While most of the country is still cold, when temperatures soar, as they inevitably will in most places along with the price of gas, it's best to fill your car up with gas during the coolest parts of the day -- early morning or late evening. You get more gas for your money that way ... or so some think. It can't hurt to try I guess. Also, prices are typically highest on weekends and lowest on Wednesdays.

Don't Drive

The best way to save on gas is, of course, to not use any. Look into carpooling and public transportation methods in your area. Sites like ERideShare.com or CarPoolConnect.com can help.

What is gas going for in your area? Any tips to share for saving at the pump?

I have to get out of the house for at least a little while each day. But I've learned to stay in town unless I have to go to my son's doctor appointment, or if we're visiting his godmother. That's the only time we leave town now. It has saved me a lot of money. Plus, I only use costco gas, which is usually around .15 cents cheaper where I live than anywhere else.

You could plan just ONE day out each week instead of going out for one or two things each day. Schedule everything to be done on one day. If the pediatrician can see you on tuesday, make tuesday the grocery day, drycleaning...whatever else chores you have to run.
See if you can connect with another SAHM in the neighborhood..or even your BFF and rideshare your errands. Split the gas, everybody saves a little.
Letting the oil cool off occasionally will save some gas money too! :D

Too bad they don't have it near us. Kroger's need to expand and come here. I always hear about all of the great deals they have and now with the bonus of cheaper gas I am really jealous.

I think it was a Kroger's gas station. At least, it was right in front of Kroger's and we got a gas discount with her Kroger's card.

They are usually a little more expensive but it might end up being cheaper with the discount. I just wish I had a Kroger near me. I went to Houston and my husband's great aunt and I went to get gas there. it was the cheapest gas around and then she had 5 cents off a gallon, I think.

Where do you get the money off for gas from Winn-Dixie? I haven't tried them yet because I didn't know anything about it. Just that they give money off for buying some items. I hope it isn't at the most expensive gas station in town. It won't really pay off then.

Tuning up your car can seriously help here.

New spark plugs and wires, new air filter and change your oil like you should will save you BIG money down the road. (an oil change costs like $35.00 anywhere...a new engine can cost $3500.00 )

A car that isn't running clean is going to cost you more fuel on a daily basis. New plugs and wires insure that your engine is actually firing on all it's cylinders...and clean air filters keep your engine from struggling to suck clean air. Both of these things work to help your engine burn fuel efficiently.

Have a mechanic check your EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve)...this is a neat little part in your engine that takes any fuel that didn't get burned the first time...and recycles it back into the throttle so it has a chance to be burned...instead of dumped out your tailpipe...wasted. *A car WILL run with a broken EGR valve...have it checked even if your car runs at this time. A bad EGR valve will make the car run like it's just...not so new anymore. It can cause the engine to surge when you are on the interstate at high speeds. Surges costs you fuel too.

While the mechanic is under the hood checking your EGR valve...ask him to clean your throttle body. Carbon built up inside those throttle body walls will make your car fire lazy..wasting fuel. If you watch him do this...you can do it next time with a can of TB cleaner and an old toothbrush. ;)

Keep your tire pressure right. This means checking the tire pressure about once a month. A change in air temp outside will change the air pressure in your tires. Tires running on low air will almost 'drag' the asphalt...slowing you down, creating resistance against your engine...causing your engine to suck more fuel. This also wears them out...meaning replacement. Overinflated tires are also going to wear out faster too. Just keep the pressure close to what is printed on the side of the tire.

Clean out the car. Take anything heavy you are not using regularly OUT of the trunk. Keep your spare and your jack of course...but that milk crate full of tools cleaners and extra fluids is NOT necessary in your car...and adds up to weight your engine has to suck fuel to lug that extra weight around all the time.

Figure your miles per gallon regularly. As soon as you notice a change in your mpg....mention it to your husband, or your mechanic. Watch your pennies and the dollars add up!

We get Fred Meyer gas. We shop there anyway and with their rewards card for every 100 you spend in the store you get 10 cents of gas. We only fill up the tank every 2 weeks and spend about 100 every two weeks on what we need. They also let you use up previous months. So if in Feb you splerged on food and spend $400 but only used the gas rewards twice, you can use it through March.

You might want to buy a Walmart gift card. If you use a walmart card, you can get 3 cents off per gallon. Not much, but it adds up and every penny helps.

Plan your trips if you have to go out. Don't make separate trips to go to the grocery store, dry cleaner, bank, etc. Do it all in one trip without going back and forth.
