Any money saving tips for a road trip from NW WA to KY?

Yeah, we are driving, using the fuel cost estimator it will cost in fuel round trip was $1200 which is a lot but about equivilant to the flight alone not including rental car & extra nights in a hotel/motel, airport parking etc. We're staying part of the time with relatives & packing snacks/meals wherever possible, mapquesting all the Wal-Marts for groceries along the way. Looking into state, county, regional, city parks, elementary schools, Mc Donald's with playplaces for things that are cheap to do while en-route. Haven't done a budget and don't know where to start with how to do a travel budget on a trip like this...my mantra is just...save save save wherever possible (so far). Thanks for the post

Well with the price of gas, have you considered flying? I would pack lunches and snacks so you don't have to stop and eat out. Same with when you get to KY. Go grocery shopping instead of eating out. Where do you plan to stay? In a hotel or motel? Motel's are usually cheaper.
TRY not to stop a lot, although I know it will be hard with a 5 and 7 yr old. Visit things like nature look outs and National Parks that don't cost money. Budget that way. If you spend money set aside a certain amount to spend. And don't go over it.
