I shop at Sam's club once a month to get all my meat for the month. Then shop at wal-mart for everything else.

We find that the meat and produce departments at Costco can not be beat. We buy approx 80% of our groceries at Costco. You get so much more in quality and quantity there.

In South Africa, I visit Makro, and do bulk shopping there only on certain items e.g. porridge, washing powder, nappies, toothpaste, soap, detergents and it really helps. When I went into the other shops the other day, I think I almost flipped to see the prices that people pay on items such as these. Scary!

Where is Sam's club? Can you shop online?

You really do have to price shop if you plan on buying in bulk. Alot of people think that Sams Club is cheaper but it really isnt. I try not to pay more than $2.00/lb for any meat that I purchase. Most of the time spend $0.99/lb for my meats. When meat goes on sale I really stock up. I'll buy several packages of chicken breast, pork chops, stew meat etc and portion them out and freeze them.

But here is a great tip for Walmart shoppers. Watch the sale ads and bring them to Walmart with you. Walmart will price match the grocery sale ads. If the stores have their store brand on sale, then you can substitute the Walmart store brand for the same price. I just did this the other day. Albertsons had a 10lb bag of potatoes on sale for $1.98 and King Soopers (Kroger), had cheese on sale for $1.67 and I just had the girl at the register price match it for me because I didn't feel like driving to those two stores that day. This only works if you have the sale ad with you.

You have to know your prices at both stores and be able to do the math for the multipliers, because some items are not always cheaper at either store.

Its ok to buy in bulk, but if you have to throw away unused portions your not saving either.

My husband who is practically bald bought a 1 gallon jug of shampoo because he thought he was saving money. Yes, he saved because he didn't have to buy shampoo for 5 years but not really because I went out and bought my own shampoo on top of that. :)
