try calling local ems/police locations, sometimes they have ones they can give to parents who can't afford them. local fire departments are a good place too.

You could also check for a local freeclcyle.org group in your location. You can post a 'wanted' ad, and people that might have a car seat you could use will contact you via e-mail.

It's worth a shot.

I've given away (and gotten) quite a bit of stuff from Freecycle.

(It's a Yahoo group)

Oh, pooh! You're about 1 year too late. If this had been posted a year ago, I could have gotten one for you. I have a friend who had a very large baby, and they had to go buy a special car seat (it looked like a wide bucket seat) for their baby. She said it cost $200. OMG! I wish I could help. Good Luck, though, and God Bless!!

You could also talk to your local health dept. or Dhs office. Either one of them could probably help you get one.

Wow your 4 month old weights as much as my 1 year old LOL

We have been shopping around for car seats too...she is getting to long for her infant one. I agree about checking with second had places...just make sure you check the expiration date, car seats expire 7 years after the date printed on the side, and if you get one from craiglist or a friend get the history on it. If they have been in a crash or something it is considered faulty because their could be hairline fractures in the base. Just some information that I came across.

Best of luck to you :O)

Check with your local fire department. some have grants that supply car seats to people who need one and can't afford to purchase one. Our fire department requires you to watch a short video on carseat saftey, thenthe seat is free. It's what's called a "convertible" seat, which accomodates 5lbs to 60 lbs. Hope this helps!

some communities offer parent support groups such as "parents as teachers", and a lot of those places will help you by exchanging in an old one for a new one. your local Department of Human recorces will hlep too! there is also e-bay craigslist, and second hand shops, and you can get them for real cheap. i have 2 foward facing 5 point harnesses and 2 high back boosters and i did pay over $15 for any one of them.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...
copy & paste this. it's a convertable carseat Rear-facing 5-35 lbs
Forward-facing 22-40 lbs.
it's only $52.00 & change. I know you said you can't afford one, but your child's safety should be #1, and with him verging on the weight limit, I think it' pretty affordable. you can get it site-to-store for $0 shipping, just pick it up at your local walmart, or it says right now it 97 cents to ship to your home.

You may want to try a local church that provides food boxes, they sometimes have carseats. My mom got a booster seat for me from a local church. The only other thing I can think of would be getting one from a friend or family member.

I hope you find an answer (new carseat) soon.
