Yes I do. We get gov't Food Stamps but in a family of 5 it isn't enough. I usually have to go every other month. But I am a coupon fanatic and don't buy name brand. Great value taste just as good as the others and my kids and husband don't know the difference. It amazing how much you can save by being aware of sales, coupons, and just buying the neccessities.

I , like most here tend to buy all generic brands. I mean its all the same thing really so why not save some $$$ if you can. Here in Canada the prices keep going up and up and I can easily spend $300 a week on food ( my allotted budget is $200) if Im not careful to feed my family of 5. I only buy brand name if its on sale for less than the generic, or occasionally for a traet. The one thing I havent been able to go generic with is school snacks. For some reason they don't like the PC or GV brands for this.
I have not used the food bank personally, although there have been times I should have. I am a food hoarder and stock up when things go on sale. This stockpile gets me through the rough patches.

i go weekly where i am. i have a low income card (in Aus) and i buy xxx amount of food for cheap. i also buy mark downs from the shops aswell to feed a family of 5 and all the strays that turn up on my doorstep. ive known people to dumpster dive and they earn heaps more than any of us.

there is no food bank here, but i wish there was after this winter we had i ve been in debt i can't get back on my feet, my cupboards are so bear at the moment my daughter who's 9 keeps complaining that there is nothing.. the way i look at it at the moment as long as there is milk, bread we will not starve. she gets dinner at school so i know she doesnt need big feed at night. there is also no coupons here either, my normal shop be's £50 every 2 weeks but even that was a struggle and that is all cheap brand food at asda.

with my husband being a long haul trucker I have not had the luxury of having a set income so during an especially bad month yes I do go, but I usually have enough in the pantry to get us through. I also contribute to our area food banks through my sons' scouting and our church. I just usually plan menu's using the sales fliers and watch for deals and I always keep dried goods on hand like rice, cornmeal, grits and beans - with a good ol' southern O'ma I learned how to cook good food with very very little ;)

From the sound of it I wish I were all of you being able to spend 200 a week on groceries seems insane to me! I have a fam of 4 I spend about 100-150 at the beginning of the month then maybe 50 a week after that. I do not get food stamps I do buy generic brands(everything) I don't go to walmart I do use coupons I have in the past used food banks and angelfood. I just feel fortunate to be able to feed my family

I hate when people use the food bank and they don't need it. When my dad was in the hospital a couple of years ago, my mom was disabled, they went to every food bank in the city and there was no food to give them. They went 8 months with no income and had to borrow food and money from relatives. For some reason they couldn't get food stamps either, I think b/c they were a family of 2. Thats SC for you. Luckily I have never used a food bank, but we donate to the one that our church stocks. We are a family of 5, one military salary. We don't live beyond our means, and we shop frugally. I buy generic and on sale. I clip coupons, but forget to take them to the store, lol. Luckily we do have discount food stores in my area. I don't shop at the commissary b/c everything there is name brand and I'd have to go on post--which I hate dealing with the other wives! . We hit Sam's club every few months to stock up on non perishables and paper products. And we only buy our bread from the bread store. So instead of paying $2 for bread, we pay 79 cents. Deals are out there, you just have to know when and where to go.

My family has been using food banks for the last year and a half, we have in the past, they are a great resource especially when you just don't have the extra money for everything. They give away great fill ins for meals especially. We make $200 too much to recieve food stamps so I'm glad something else is there when the government can't help. I am unemployed and looking for a job and my husband is disabled. We live on his fixed income and usually only have about $150 to take to the store for groceries, household and personal products. It just doesn't cut it.

Right now we are lucky enough that with budgeting, etc we don't have to use that option, but my husband and I have in the past and used to go when we really had a need for food in the house (not because we wasted money, but at one point he was unemployed and we couldn't find any job for him). I think at that time between assistance and my wages we went about once every month to every other month. I have helped others use our local food bank tho and now I try to "Pay it Forward" by giving back, either money, donations or time so that others who need that option have it.

I have never visited a Food Bank but I do clip coupons! I once saved over $50.00 on a week's worth of groceries and everyone behind me was amazed! SO was I! It really paid off that particular week. I usually spend about $150-$200 on food every week so if I can save some I am happy to. I buy mostly generic brands except for certain chips, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and certain items that don't come in generic (ie: my favorite chili mix, lunchables, diet pepsi, etc). I also hit up the sales when I see stores having a sale on something we use a lot of: drinks, school snacks, juice, etc. I wish I could make myself buy canned vegetables. That would be a LOT cheaper but I prefer to buy fresh or frozen veggies... even if I buy frozed generic brand veggies they are still more than two cans of the same vegetable. I may try to work on that...

I actually try to donate to mine once a week - with the use of coupons you can get some things for free or super cheap. Publix has pasta BOGO and there's a coupon - I was able to get 14 boxes of pasta for $4. I hope that if I help others now, when I need it someone will be there for me :) I do write about all my savings on my web-site - stop by and check it out sometime. It really helps with the grocery bill.
